I need to replace my HP Pavillion dv2000 14.1" screen.

    I have a few questions:

    1) Are there any Irish shops I can just walk in to, specifiy the screen I want, and then walk out with the screen (I know it's doubtful, just making sure no such shop exists.)

    2) Around how much would a) buying a screen and replacing it myself or b) getting the laptop repaired by someone else, cost?

    3) Are there any irish sites which deal in laptop screens (the sticky at the top of the page is slightly too exhaustive).

    4) Would you recommend buying and installing a new screen myself, or just getting it repaired by someone else (i'm reasonably compatent, but not sure how difficult it really is to do).

    Thanks.

If you can use a screwdriver you can replace a laptop screen. Its fairly easy, just be delicate.

Irish sites - no idea. You wont find a retailer very likely. In the US I ordered the screen I needed online for less than $200 after shipping and tax, and that was a 15.4" Your best bet is to email someplace like dabs.ie or komplett and ask them if they know somebody. Komplett has their own forum here: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=242

i actually know a chinese pc/laptop repair man who will probably fix up any problems you have :Di recommend him if ya wanna save your time and pay abit on someone who can fix it quickly and properly.

he is located at the top floor of the building near the big Bank of Ireland in city centre, the street opposite the Westin Hotel...ermm...i dont know what's the building call..but it is kinda like a complex building, the ground floor is a bookmaker, the 2nd floor is some hair saloon and flight ticket agency, there is also a international caller/internet in the building. The man has a small room on the left at the top floor as i can recall.

he charge a reasonable price on repairing stuffs but of course the replacement materials he use wont be the very good quality ones(his customers are mostly foreigners).

p/s:after read another thread about the DIy change your own screen,i'd say OP you should try to fix it yourself :D

I had mine replaced in a shop in Dun Laoghaire last week. I cant remember the name, but its a small place on (i think) Patrick Street. They charged me €175 and it had it done the same day. Screen seems fine now so it saved me buying a new laptop.

    edit: some words of wisdom:

-most places will charge diagnostics, especially busier shops as a way to manage workflow/demand

-not every shop agent is going to sit there and google a model laptop and give you an estimate right at the counter. Perhaps if you're the first customer they've had all day.

-With the laptop actually there it should be relatively simple to eyeball an estimate but thats not to say that they dont have to source the actual screen.

-If you were able to get quotes from elsewhere and one shop charges you €40 to look at it before quoting, wouldn't you have been just as happy with the other quotes?

-some places will put your deposit/consultation fee towards a repair/service.

FWIW, I ended up buying a screen online from England, and replacing it myself. Cost about 80 euro or something. The pros are that, well, it cost only 80 euro. The con, is that I messed up slightly during reassembly, such that the front bezel never fit on properly again. But this, I'd like to emphasise, was my own fault. Also, there's a wedge of paper keeping the connector at the back firmly in place; again, possibly my own fault.

That said, it's been working since around the time I started this thread, so I'd recommend the DIY route for sure.
