I was wondering: are the golf ones OK for hunting work or does one need one of the more expensive ones?

    Lordapard..
You will find that with most of the budget minded r.f`s you can only get them to work on large solid objects like a ditch or a tree to get a true reading..the joy of the leica is that your able to ping bunnies crows ect..you dont need to find the nearest large object to the animal your trying to measure..Just aim it at the animal you want to shoot..do it a few times to be sure, adjust your aim to the distance displayed in the rf and if you get it right happy days..There a great help when deer stalking..sometimes distaces can be hard to judge when in low light or there is a lot of mist about.I have often thought the deer is around 350 out but when i pinged it, it was well within shooting range..

    Good luck

How good are they. Ping anobject and then take a step back and ping again. It will now show the extra yard of range. And with the Leica if you keep your finger on the button it will keep range reading as you move it around.

Look around for a secondhand one they have good optics and electronics.

I bought the LEICA RANGEMASTER 900 CRF brand new off eBay last year for €300 - it was a year to the day exactly.
The 900 was a bit cheaper than the 1200 and since I'm never going to shoot at anywhere near even half that range I thought it was a better choice.
The 900 has given me readings well out past 900 yards anyway.

I see Cabelas have them on sale - albeit very expensive still - but maybe there's a new model coming out?
