One of my favourite Irish films ever just watching again now still brillant - it has to be Roddy Doyle's best film adaptation

Its difficult to get a DVD for Region 2. Was there ever a Roddy Doyle box set released here in Ireland?

Thank God to TV3 for showing it again

I remember the Snapper/The Van double boxset was available but never seen one with commitments in it.

Another Irish film that impossible to get your hand on is I Went Down. that was one of the funniest irish movies I've ever seen.

    How concise

Anyway, i really dont, Colm Meaney is the only person who can act in it, the rest of the cast are terrible, they all sound like amateurs reading lines off a teleprompter and some of the dialogue is horrendous, for every half decent line that comes out of Meaney theres crap like the first scene where Sharon and her gaggle of impossibly fugly friends are talking in the pub, its cringeworthy

TBH I found it hillarious the first time I watched it back in the day,but somehow in watching it again I found it very dated and cliched, I guess I am becoming an old fart because I just dont know why I found it so funny in the first place

it was great to see again as I havent since it first came out. it's an amazing snapshot of dublin and the rare auld times even though it was only the early 90's. Oh how dublin has changed and the people in it since then.

Its ok, not too fond of it myself. Just reminds me of loud mouth "salt of the earth" Dubs that you overhear on buses, in waiting rooms, etc who think they are just so funny.

    PS. Im a Dub. ;)

Yeah 180full-brendan-gleeson.jpg is such a bad actor in it. Insert rolleyes here, if you like that sort of thing.

The film didnt do the book justice. Was very poorly made. "Sharon's" fake dub accent was shocking, amongst other things. Shame really, 'cos the commitments and the van were great, but the snapper really let the triology down.

This is a class film !! Have seen it several times at this stage and it never gets old. Anyone who doesn't laugh at this needs to get a sense of humour transplant !!!!!!! :D

Well for me its my all time Fav irish film. Caught it again last friday on TV3 . Its mad how dated it looks now.

Bad Dub accents? Ive met Dublin people with worse Dub accents.

    That was A1... Good Girl.

My dad sends this comment in my mother's direction along with addressing her as Sharon every time he wants to annoy us/embarrass us when we have company

Whoever mentioned Sharon's God awful 'Dublin' Accent is spot on but that's a minor fault. Colm Meaney is brilliant and the script is excellent. Great movie.

Just say'n that given it was based on such a good book, the film had the potential to be a lot better. Colin Meaney aside the acting was very 'Fair City'. Out of interest, why the change of name from 'Jimmy Rabbitte' to 'Dessie Curley'?? I really liked the follow on in the book from the commitments, and into 'the van' (eg. reference to jimmy jr, outspan and mickah from the commitments) but this wasent in the film. Was it a copyright thing or anybody know??

20th Century Fox made/owns The Commitments so the characters couldn't be used by the people who made The Snapper and The Van so the surname was changed.
