But people always say its so big that they just never really settled in or made friends so that's putting me off?!..Is it worth going to?!

some of the nicest, coolest, friendliest people ive ever met, ive met in UCD. My best friends ive met here. Its the same as any other college. Get involved, talk to people, and you'l be fine!

    +1
That whole 'UCD is so big/impersonal etc' thing almost put me off applying, but in reality it's just the same as any other uni (only better :D) the atmosphere on campus is deadly and you'll make plenty of friends once you get involved in the clubs and socs. Good luck!

Sure thing, how much are you willing to pay? I won't go lower than a fiver.

I think that the whole "it's too big" thing is quite true in the 'omnibus' kinda courses. I know a good few ppl in arts never made friends (2nd yr) and to not have people in your lectures that you know would be unbelieveably ****. I do psychology which has maybe 100 people in the course and every1 has loads of mates and we all go out as a big group. This is true of most courses of this size afik.

You will make friends if you live on campus though that is more or less guarnteed. If you are doing this i would reccomend ucd, because you get to live beside college. Also blow the extra grand and live in roebuck if your doing this. the craic is unbelievable, i lived at h0me and it's my biggest regret. 1st year on campus is the ****ing ****.

Imho ppl say that you can make friends outside of your course, and you can if you meet people out and make the effort. Its harder if you are from dublin coz ur just ganna hang around eith your mates the whole time but i wouldnt rey on "the societies" to get you friends. The people in them are all kinda a similar type of person...... quite "RaNdOM XD" and well i dunno. Not the coolest most chill people ever in my experience. Espically because a lot of them get a lot of situational confidence from being older members of their society so you think they are cool but when you all go out and socialise beyond the group they turn into insecure geeks. This is espically true of the societies with a big social element, obviously the cool sporting ones liek rugby or surfing or whatever are less like this. I just wouldnt rely on it being 100% honest.

Edit: trinity is a much better college with a better reputation and it's central and its much better equipped, nicer looking and in less debt. The people are slightly wankery though, faux intellectual, which is an annoyance but its a much more "authenthic" college/university experince imho. which can be a good or bad thing.

That was hilarious. I would like to go to Trinity but I don't want to end up with a load of D4 ****...and I don't mean people _from_ D4 I mean...well you know what I mean. I like the sound of UCD

If you want to avoid D4 **** your going to have to settle for a bad college. They tend to do quite well in the Leaving Cert. Or, you could get of your ignorant high horse, actually talk to a few of us and not go into college with prejudging people which people like you tend to accuse D4 "****" of

Pwnd. I was waiting for that, and fair enough. I don't want to be prejudiced... I just want some honest opinions.

To avoid D4 people (wether or not they are **** is besides the point)their presence seems to be minimal in the following major societies - the scifi society, gamesoc, the ag science/philosophy/geology ones, the lgbt, and maybe one or two more!

If you have a particular distaste for D4s, and dont see the above societies or courses being a major part of your college experience, you're looking at DIT/DCU as your college of choice!

To avoid D4 people (wether or not they are **** is besides the point), most of your friends are probably going to have to come from one of the following major societies - the scifi society, gamesoc, the ag science one, the geology one, the lgbt, and maybe one or two more!

For anyone else, im just pointing out the societies that from my perspective dont seem to be full of D4s.

Otherwise your looking at DIT/DCU as your college of choice!

Do you actually go to UCD?

Firstly -yeah i do! Nearly finished second year!

Secondly- Its just my opinion, the OP presumably wants the opinions of several people to make his mind up, and thats my contribution! Im sure he'd rather i made that post than for him to come back to his thread at christmas telling us he hates UCD for whatever reason, and for me to say "ah yeah i could have told ya that but i couldnt have been arsed at the time".

Thirdly- im not saying anything good about any of the societies ive mentioned, or anything bad about the ones i didnt! And iv got no real affiliation with any society!

Fourthly- Iv been known to get a little defensive when it comes to stuff I've posted:D

Don't even dream of going near the L&H as they are just the aforedreaded D4 **** on a terrifying scale using up-their-arse terms like "madam chairman" and "point of order". 'Law Soc' is more of the same.

Trad Soc is solid with mighty trips to Cathair na Mart and other places. Birds A1, too. An Cumann Gaelach similar and great social nights. Also sign up early for the Bord na Gaeilge classes as all the hot chicks are there and you'll get great nights in Club an Chonradh and the like. If you're a girl needless to say all the cool guys are in all these places. ;-)

Much, much more sound and cool people in UCD than D4 ****. You'll have no bother meeting down-to-earth people. So while it can be very intimidating, it is also much more likely that you will meet people with whom you'll click.

This thread is brilliant. I still don't know why so many people get so f*cking hung up on whether someone went to a private school or not. Breaking news Trevor Mc Donald.... if you don't like someone or the way they act, don't bother with them! I mean it's not like there are roughly 17,213 other human beings studying there. As long as you don't act like Ian Huntley you will make friends.

OP, UCD is a good college. You could do much worse.

I'm pretty sure they have their fair share of D4 members. and certainly they are not major societies.

    regardless, who actually cares???
if you're not a fan of the D4 genre then you at least acquire an infinite supply of their seemingly un-necessary mannerisms (to put it one way)

ucd's great all round, f*ck the D4s they're pretty much outnumbered! And it's not them that are the worst, the worst, and I mean the very worst people apart from hippy knobs, anti-fee lefties, and rugger retards, is the 'country folk' who go to ucd and lose all 'provincial' mannerisms and like parasite assimilate themselves to their hosts, in this case the D4 genre and clique. Country D4's are to ridiculed and ostensibly ostracised!;)

For what it's worth, having attended both, UCD is far worse for the D4 crowd than Trinity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭the evil lime

certainly they are not major societies.

Well, it kinda depends on how one defines major really. Some of the large societies do so little to contribute to campus life that I forget they exist for weeks and months on end. I'm not including the L&H there by the way, I actually quite like the stuff they get up to.

I only know the stats on gamesoc, but we're reasonably big (probably in the top ten on campus... not certain) and run around 5-10 events a week of varying scale plus a large convention. I have no idea what percentage of members live where, nor do I particularly give a damn.

376, second largest of the "small" societies (after sci-fi [Because Gareth cheats]), second most active society on the campus(after dramsoc), most active "small" society on campus.

This statement assumes Dramsoc to not be in the small soc category, whether they are varies depending on who you talk to.

    UCD

    What can I saw!

A marvellous place full of awesome people. I can honestly say some of the greatest days of my life were spent there.

Go for UCD! You'll never regret it!

Actually, it's just a clarification of some points I made in response to your post... now admittedly if he'd put it in a sticky with the heading "Gamesoc is awesome and this is why!"... then there might be an issue. Besides, it's justified in response to what you said for members of any of the societies listed to post similar responses.

surely it's the course you should be thinking about. Worried about not making friends? So what if nobody talks to you. It's only 4 years out of your life. Keep your head down, get your lower second class honours and slide away unnoticed into the real world where the lack of conversation in UCD will have transformed you into a human wiling to talk to anyone :D

UCD is class. As long as you're chatty, outgoing and open-minded you'll have like fifty friends within the first week. I'm from the country and trust me, living on campus is a great experience. D4s don't bite either, once you get to know them they realise that life isn't just the bubble they were brought up in.

Trinity is far worse for pretentious country people masquerading as intellectuals compared to UCD. A mate of mine goes there and he reckons its fairly laughable,
