You'll want something with an alpha channel... png, tga or maybe a gif if you're willing to go to 8bit colour.

Do you have the original image? you could cut it out and set it with an transparent background in PS or Fireworks.

    Photoshop.

    Assuming only layer.

    select white stuff

    press backspace

    save as png or something.

I've done it for web banners using gif.

From what I remember, there's a handy option under Help > Automate > Create Transparent Image or something like that. You select the area you want made transparent, it'll come out as a PNG.

for web viewing you can do it either using .gif or .png format.

    .gif

    tp_a.gif

    .png

    tp_b.png

they both have advantages and disadvantages. a transparent gif is pretty much supported in every browser, however it can only contain 256 colour values, so not ideal for photograhy.

The .png file is supported in most browswers - but not all. (not suppoted in ie 6 and older for example). But, it's compression is much friendlier for photography.

another option would be to apply a round (white or same colour as intended background) vigenette in your favourite photo editing software!

    which works well for printing

    :)
