Irish Companies & Shipping Costs

Why do Irish companies charge so much for shipping in this country. In Britain Amazon has free shipping to it's British customers as well as loads of other companies like mymemory, play.com, etc who even ship to Ireland for free. I even buy loads of stuff from DX in Hong Kong and they are free. If Irish companies did this surely they would get ALOT more business? (if the actual price was good obviously!)

I bought the WD HDTV Media Centre yesterday at Amazon for e99 (the shipping was £2.93 compared to e13 from Komplett) and put me wondering.

    Komplett's Postage Rates:

    Republic of Ireland (3-4 working days delivery)Up to 10kg = €12.50 ; 10kg to 30kg = €15.00

they take a bit extra on the smaller items, and give it back on the larger items

I wish they would divide their weight classes a bit more though. Plenty of other websites go up in increments of 2 or even 1 kilo, so it's quite a pain to have to pay 13 postage on an item about 500g and only about 15 euro in the first place. It's the reason I never buy small bits and pieces from Komplett (or any Irish company for that matter) and go to E-Bay instead.

Exactly. Buying a memory stick for e14 is pointless when you have to pay e13 for postage. Sometimes its just a pain having to pick out more stuff just to have value for the shipping costs.

Courriers won't charge us less if we asked them to deliver a piece of paper, it is just the cost involved in getting a signed insured delivery. We are currently working at getting another cheaper delivery but it is not as simple as putting small items in an envelope and going into a post office.

We only charge €4.99 to anywhere in Ireland - and many of our items are wooden, so are very heavy. It certainly seems unreasonable to charge over a tenner for postage.

Since electronics are going to be riskier transactions than toys, perhaps they are factoring this in?

So you pay a little over €4 ex vat for delivery? That is amazingly cheap... even with insurance factored in. Who does your deliveries?

No - we lose money on delivery charges - but we think it's worth it. As an online buyer myself, I think the delivery charge can be a major deterrent, so our philosophy it to subsidise shipping in the hope that we'll get more orders.

Ah ok, that makes sense. Problem is with IT equipment margins are so tight we cannot do that.
