    Anyone got thoughts on this...
Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) has announced that SKY Television NZ will be the host broadcaster for all matches of Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand. Under the deal, SKY will work with RWCL to produce comprehensive coverage of all 48 matches

SKY went on to state they are excited to be involved in what promises to be the biggest sporting event ever to be staged in New Zealand and will deliver live coverage of all 48 Rugby World Cup games to its subscribers

I thought Rugby WC is a free to view gaurantee...?

It's Sky tv in New Zealand not here in Europe.

It being the host broadcaster simply means they will be providing the picture to all the other TV stations.

As the previous posters said this will only have a baring on the pictures broadcast from the matches. That means they provide the cameramen and other technicians on the field or at the stadium.

Don't be suprised if Sky in Britain nab the rights for 2011 which haven't been sold yet. With the kick off times the way they will be i doubt ITV will pay for all the games bearing in mind they have no money these days. The home nations matches will have to be on terrestial tv but aside from that i wouldn't be one bit suprised. The IRB already sold out to Setanta here and other pay tv outlets elsewhere.

I hope to christ RTE get the rights over TV3. Tv3's coverage was truly woeful, with the depressing and souless Matt Cooper the worst of it. Id say BBC will make a large bid for it terrestrially this year, they seem to have all the money these days.

Isn't it part of that list of free to air sporting events. RTE will have it

Cant find the Irish version of these, but if its the same as the UK only the rugby world cup final must be shown on Free to Air TV. The British list can be found here:

The Irish one requires all Irish RWC games plus the final must be shown free to air. Its why Setanta had the rights but had to sell the Irish games to TV3.

Yep, in Britain only the final is protected, however i seriousely doubt that Sky would get away with just giving the final to terrestrial. The IRB and six nations committee are muppets for selling almost everything to pay tv, they recently sold Sky in Italy the 6 nations, hardly gonna boost the sport is it:rolleyes: Sky have enough quality rugby with the H Cup and Lions exclusive, which is a disgrace imo, if it was soccer it wouldn't be like that.

Its already not like that, seeing as RTE and BBC get the rights to the champions league (soccers exact equivilant to the HC) every time. Ridiculous imo.

It's ITV, not BBC. And ITV only get rights to Tuesday's CL games for some reason. I agree with what you're saying though

Can't see rte even getting the rights to Irish matches, I hope Sky do get it because that means I won't have to bother with getting Setanta again.

Irish games in the RWC aren't protected by Irish law. It was the IRB that mandated that all countries should have their games on free-to-air TV

Setanta would not have got the RWC contract without allowing the Irish games to be simulcast on a FTA channel

Yes they are, they're covered by the Broadcasting (Major Events Television Coverage) Act 1999.

Didn't think they were covered, seem to remember some campaign a few years ago for people to lobby/petition for their inclusion in the act but that only soccer matches got in.
