It is governed by various Sections of the Intoxicating Liquor Act 1927 as amended by the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008.

You can read the two Acts here:

    2008 Act: http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2008/en/act/pub/0017/print.html
    1927 Act: http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1927/en/act/pub/0015/print.html

It is one law that should be repealed imho.

Are you sure we want 4-5 days solid drinking on our Indepence Day?

The only days that have real restrictions are Good Friday and Christmas Day - both of which fall on days where people take multiple days off.

If I want to buy alcohol on those days I am inconvenienced.

If the matter of separation of church and state happened in 1973 why are the government still pandering to the will of the dominant religion in the state?

How about the separation of Church and State?

How is it just accepted as the norm here that a law can be based on religion?? Aren't we supposed to be multicultural these days??

If a law was passed tomorrow saying that no meat or meat products could be sold on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday there would be uproar!

This particular law dates back to 1927 when the catholic church had a cast iron grip on the running of the country. Officially the church's grip was released in 1973 when the constitution was amended to terminate the "special relationship" between the state and the church.

Unofficially it lives on thru some of the laws that still exist from that era.

It would be that a religious law has no place in what should be a secular state.

Nice idea Mr Wolfe Tone, when do you think we'll get around to it?

Its a sad day for Ireland if we cant live without alcohol for two days, a good distance apart, in a country that is probably catholic majority.

Why should the Catholics direct how the significant amount of non believers behave?

You would be surprised the amount classes as "non believers" who actually do believe in some god. But thats another story.

If you go to another country which practises something we don't believe in or fully support, they are not going to accommodate the minority (even if its a large number).

I don't see the problem myself.

How about the state makes something else illegal to sell on a randomly moving day- like the on the Friday before the first Sunday after the first full moon after the autumnal equinox it was illegal to buy fuel (petrol/Diesel/briquettes/gas) ??? or even meat?

I mean good Friday's not even a public holiday nor does the catholic church ban consumption of alcohol that day.

I've regularly seen tourists looking (in vain) for somewhere to eat a meal on good Friday in Dublin - it's a great welcome for them.

In Germany, most shops have to close by about 7pm, the only exxception being those in train stations, airports, etc.

Yeah, they ban the sale of groceries for half the year.
