Figure this is the best forum for this, but it could also fit in Fitness or Athletics - will have to see what kind of replies it gets!

Have recently heard of http://www.gaelforcewest.ie/ and it looks pretty cool. Just wondering if anyone on here has done it (the main part of the event involves cycling) and what their experience was, what training they did, etc?

    Thanks

It was discussed a couple of weeks back on that thread. That might have the info you're looking for.

Yep thanks, but I did a search beforehand alright and saw that thread.

Just wondering if anyone here has done it before and what they thought of it, more general info, for now.

Well apparently from those who have done it before, the cycling is nearly a respite in comparison to the cross country run and the Croagh Patrick section.

Celestial, Anything specific you want to know? (I did it last year). Its a good race. There is a race coming up soon which you might also be interested, as the format is very similar, the Diamond Quest.

Murph100, the only respite is the kayak timeout! Its all go apart from that :)

Sup Enduro, what kind of training did you put in for the event? Did you do it with a mate? You find it tough?

My cardio levels are only ok (I'm more of a weights man) so my aim would be to get in lots of runnin and a good bit of cycling in with regard to training - August 22 seems far enough away until you think of it in weeks - less than 20 weeks/4 and a half months. So time to get some serious work in!

Also - did you do kayak practice before heading over to the event?

OK, just to let you, I did more than take part, I was competing at the front of the field, and I'm an experienced adventure racer. So I'd be consistantly putting in the training required.

anyway, 4 months is loads of time. If I was training specifically for the GFW I would try and alternate cycling and running sessions, and try and hit as many hills as possible whilst doing both. For the running section, the run up Croagh Patrick is a very tough intense run. It would be a good idea to take part in a few IMRA races to get used to racing on technical terraine, if possible. Indeed there is a race up Croagh Patrick on the May bank holiday weekend. The IMRA route is tougher than GFW route, but it would be a good experince to give it a go.

For the cycling, make sure you're getting out on your race bike. I found doing routes on the roads around wicklow to be good training. I'd suggest joining up with the boardsies for some of their spins, and hopefully lots of friendly advice.

I'd be kayak trained anyway, and its part of my training routine. But for GFW specifically you wouldn't need to do a lot at all. If you've never kayaked before then it would be worth getting out once or twice just to get comfortable with the idea of Kayaking and to make sure the race isn't the place you make all your initial mistakes. But in time terms its a tiny part of the race, so shouldn't take too much emphasis in your training at all. Having said that, its an enjoyable thing to do in itself, and is good core training when done right.

I am going to do Gaelforce this summer and as a complete newbie (!) am looking to buy a bike - it would be great to get some feedback.

I would like to be able to use the bike for general getting about and a bit of touring but dont really see myself doing massive amounts of off road cycling. The gaelforce website recommends a road bike but what about something like this http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=38&idproduct=28188 or this http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=38&idproduct=20935 as a compromise between a mountain bike and a road bike?

    Help appreciated!
