I bought a 2003 Passat Highline Leather 130bhp about 6 months ago. Very clean car and full service history. It cost me 10,000 euro. Took me 3 months to find and a hell of alot of cars test driven before I found a "clean" genuine one.

If you drop your 130bhp needs to 100bhp you might have an easier job. But 3000 euro.. it will get you the 130bhp engine but not the car :D

    Is that engine the 130bhp?

I was offered a 2005 Passat Tdi company car for €5000, fair enough it had 90k miles on it. Of course I can get a 01 Passat for 3k, but my 3k budget is for a 2002. Im being total serious here lads, you may thing Im crazy but were heading into an economic depression. Another 4 years of this.

100brake passat and the tuning box off ebay for 60 quid makes a perfectly acceptable 130bhp!

Doubt it, I don't think the 130's came in basic spec. Open to correct on that.

And the fact that it's pink:eek:

You're dead right. Just don't expect to find a nice one anytime soon. It will take you a while. Bring a mechanic and check the boot sticker for actual engine power. You can remap the 100 to 130. Or you can remap the 130 to 160-170 :D

A lot of the cars I seen where horrible starting from cold, loads of smoke. When driving they had lots of rattles and engine noises. Smoke from exhaust when accelerating. Loud noises coming from the turbo. Something wrong steering (bushing or bushes) according to my mechanic. Suspension was usually in a bad way. Steering was always out of alignment and once you go above 100kmph the steering its like a gigantic round vibrating dildo :D Inside of the car was often in a bad way. Uneven wear on the tyres.

Actually alot of this is true for inspecting any car but I found a lot of these things on the Passat TDi's that I was looking at.

A lot of these things are only small things to fix, but they are just some of the signs that the car was driven harshly up and down back roads.

Do you know what the codes will be on the boot sticker for the 130 engine? Oh I'm sure there are plenty of farmers Passats lying around! Towing the odd 2 ton trailer :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭BlackWizard

The sticker is inside the boot near the tyre well.

You will be looking for the power output in KW. So the 130bhp is 98KW. And the 100bhp is 76KW.

I was told by a guy a few weeks ago that it's possible to get this information from the engine/vehicle number. But I think you need to have access to a computer or certain website for that.

Sometimes that sticker is in bits and hard to read. So you might have to get a torch and get in close.

Edit: I never done this, but it might be a good idea to go to a dealership and test drive a mint condition Passat (same model and engine) maybe up a few years. Just to get a feel for how the car should perform.

That sticker could easily be stuck on couldn't it? Not likely but possible. Is there no way by looking at the chassis plate in the engine bay without the need for a website?

I'll go out and check now for ya. I never had a proper look at that.

    Found this on the net

Engine code AVB is 100bhp, codes AVF and AWX are 130bhp.

Also is the KW stated on the log-book?

    3100 + the Range Rover Vogue? :D

If that was comfortline and in good condition. You could chance your arm and bring him down to 1800 euro. "Recession blah blah.." *kick the tyre then tut* "I'll give you 1600 for it." :)

Edit: I thought it said 70k miles. It says 170k. I would want a full service history at that amount.

Probably an ex-taxi with that mileage.

Have you had any problems with the car? Clutch, turbo..?

    :D:D:D

Just sold mine less than 2 weeks ago. No tax and the Nct is out the end of this month. Having said that it had a full service history with receipts. I looked after it for the time I had it, it had no rattles or smoke but I dont think the guying buying it was too pushed about the book of history

Anyway it went for 3400 as per my sig.

Best of luck with your search Tommy......don't be afraid to spend a bit extra on a well looked after model. You might find one for 3000 but it might cost you in the long run. Thats not to say a 5000 one is well looked after. Dont be afraid of high milers. Bottom line: Get someone to check it out, there are plenty of clocked VAG's going around, it amazes me how there are so many below 100k miles of this age, people normally buy these for doing high mileage.

You would be doing very well finding good clean car for that kind of money. If you do find one I would be looking very carefully at service history as the PD engine is very particular about the engine oil only 507.00 or 505.01 spec.
Suspension top arms are known to wear particularly on early models, CV joints also, the boots can weather and crack resulting in dried out c.v. joints.
Window regulators can fail, very messy getting the window back up.
Previous water damage to the CCU (known problem on certain platform VW/AUDI).

I saw a VW Passat only last week with 140k on the clock go for over 4k.
I Sincerly doubt you will find a good clean 100bhp example at that money never mind a 130bhp comfortline.

02 base model bid to 2900 in Merlin earlier this week and not sold at that. Add the fees and you are up to 3300. Can't see you getting a decent 130bhp one for 3k. The car market might be in recession but people are not giving cars away for nothing.

The recession is mainly affecting the prices of the big luxury cars and 4x4's - the high-end market. Low price cars are always in demand, especially in good condition.

A pal, he dabbles in the trade, just got a '00 100bhp with 130k - due a timing belt change for €800  - I am not messing, haven't seen the car but the bro'in law says its pretty good (he drives a 130bhp) other than it being slow compared to his.

He also had a choice of another '00 that's just gone through the NCT for €1500. It's now also sold - not surprising.

Cheap ones are out there, but mostly in the trade.
