any1 know at what point does the timing belt need to be changed in a 4x4 such as a Pajero? I have about 84,000km or a bit over 50,000 mils on the clock and the thought just hit me there the other day..

also, is it gonna be expensive?please say no!

I got mine done at last service 90000Kilometers. Price was about 400 euro including the service and a couple of brake pads. Not at a main dealer though.

    Hi XDA,

is yours a 3.2 version? a mechanic just told me that hes pretty sure that the 3.2 have a timing chain rather than a belt, and the result is that it just needs to be tightened which he says only costs a fraction of what it costs to change a belt (450 ish he quoted for a belt change). He said that tightening the chain could be done as part of a regular service! fingers crossed its a chain!

Why not just ring a main dealer with the reg or chassie, and they will tell you if its a chain or belt. Or just look under the bonnet, if there's a black plastic cover at the front of the car , just behind the fan belts its a belt, if its a steel cover its a chain.

As far as I know most Mitsubishi dealers reccomend changing the belts at about 50,000mls. Theres also a balancing belt in there so that'll be changed too. May aswell change the crankshaft oil seal while your in there too, only takes a couple of mins extra and worth changin cause they do give trouble and start to leak so no harm in doing it to save you having to get it all stripped down again in the future!!
