HMV Sale - Henry Street branch

Went into HMV in Henry Street Dublin yesterday to compare their prices to the prices I saw in their store in Newry and was shocked - yes shocked :D - that they were cheaper on a lot of items, even cheaper than online retailers, e.g., I bought:

    - Butterfly effect for €3.99 - this was £3.99 in Newry and is €5.99 on Play.com

    - Fast & the Furious/2 Fast 2 Furious/Tokyo drift (triple pack) for €9.99 - this was £9.99 in Newry and is €23.49 on Play.com

    - Night at the Museum was €4.99 - £6.99 in Newry and €6.49 on Play.com

    - Battlestar Galactica - Seasons 1 - 4 (although only half of season 4) for €39.99 - was £39.99 in Newry and €42.99 on Play.

There were many more bargains but I already had most of these DVDs. Fair play to HMV as they are one of the few UK (and ROI) retailers not ripping us off in this country.

Finally they also had the best deal I could find on the new Nintendo DSi - €169.99 for the console plus a 1GB memory card. They were selling this for £159.99 in Newry.

I was in there last Thursday deciding wether to buy some Dexxter and South Park boxsets there or online. Think I'll stick with the online option. Still way cheaper.

There was a time when online couldn't be beaten but thats not the case now. As my original post stated, in all 4 items I bought, HMV were cheaper than Play.com. The Nintendo DSi is €25 cheaper than Play's price but as Play won't ship consoles here thats a moot point. HMV Ireland have really cleaned up their act when it comes to prices and they are cheaper than their UK branches and online shops for a lot of items. By all means shop around but don't be blinkered by thinking that online is always cheaper cause its not.

I noticed this too, was over in Newcastle a few weeks ago and the prices in HMV wee higher or the same as Dublin. For a store without much competition, bravo!
They've also been the cheapest place for new games lately, and there's the 10% student discount!

After the summer there is no more student discount though, I was talking to the people in HMV and they said because there isn't much competition there's no point in doing the student discounts anymore :(

And there goes me as a customer..

They already annoy me with having to have the HMV student card when purchasing something even if you already have your own valid student card when they only give the HMV card out for the first 2 weeks of September usually then claim to be "all out" from then on.

The point of the student card is to build up a loyalty with the poor student so they continue to shop with you after they get a job and can afford to pay full price so they're only breaking that trust that they build..

Guess I'll just buy my games online so. It'll be cheaper but as I'm a student it's not like I have anything better to do with my time other than wait :pac:

Problem is still that while their sales are usually fantastic more often than not they charge far too high for items whice can be picked up for half the price in a shop just down the road. Felon on Blu Ray was 38 euro in HMV the day it was released (and still was last week), I picked it up in Gamestop for 17 euro on release day. JCVD was 16 online, 30 in HMV. I can go on and on about just how expensive they are, My Name is Bruce Blu Ray 14 euro delivered, the DVD in HMV 23 euro, the Blu Ray 30 euro.

They have been the cheapest place for new games since the end of last year.
€52.99 for new PS3 & 360 games, cheaper than Play.com and you don'y have to wait a week for delivery.
They have even forced the usually rip-off GAME to drop prices on new games in responce.

Yes they are the cheapest for games at the moment. Resi Evil 5 in HMV Dublin is €35.99 - it was £35.99 in their branch in Newry and Game in Newry were selling it for £40.

I was in HMV in the square and there really was some good deals in there.

    Most notably...

    Batman - Dark Knight - €9.99

House (Season 1-4 BOXSET) - approx €60 for the lot. Can't remember exact price.

I picked up Family Guy Season 7 for €13, also saw many HBO seasons averages about €25 for the likes of The Wire, Six Feet Under, Rome, Deadwood and Curb Your Enthusiasm which was under 20 per box set.

Really good deals, if only I didn't already have most of them!! :(

I was looking for the Planet Earth documentary on bluray in hmv on Grafton Street last weekend, found it for €80 so I bought it online instead from hmv for about €30 delivered. I couldn't believe it when I seen the price, I knew it might be a little bit more expensive and I didn't mind that for the convenience of getting it there and then, but €50 was excessive.

Yeah, bizarrely enough there's some prices in the Dublin HMVs that are either the same as or cheaper than the UK branches. And their online store is very seperate from the prices in store - for instance there's no 4 for €xx deals online.

Tremors box set for €13 is great though.

I picked up the complete Deadwood boxset for €45 in the Henry Street branch last week.Good deal considering it's €73 from play.com.

HMV (in Dublin city centre anyway) have a good selection of Tartan DVDs for about 8Euros, some at 6Euros and they've a couple of other "World Cinema" on the cheap. Grafton St has a good selection.
