Optus may swap fibre network for stake in govt operator Thursday 9 April 2009

Australian operator Optus is considering offering the government its fibre-optic network in return for a stake in the new national broadband company. The Australian government has announced plans to set up a public operator to handle the roll-out of fibre-to-the-premises services across the country. Private operators will be invited to cooperate with the new company. The director of government and corporate affairs at Optus, Maha Krishnapillai, said the company is looking into ways the swap would work, ABC news reports. By using the operator's existing fibre infrastructure, the government could get a head start on rolling out the new infrastructure, he said.

    Agreed, smart lateral thinking too.

It would be nice if we could have some joined up thinking too...

If only we had a Minister with foresight or indeed an industry willing to work together.
