    Hi there,

Looking to pick up some pedals and shoes for my racer. Was thinking of Shimano
Ultegra pedals, just cuz I dont know any better and they have shoes that'll fit me (size 12!).

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance

Most of the major systems are grand, and they're mostly much of a muchness.. Any of the cleat form the major brands will fit on a decent set of Road Shoes, so a brief list of your choices would be:
    1. Speedplay
    2. Time
    3. Look
    4. Shimano

There's probably a few others, but they're the main ones. I use Shimano Ultegra at the moment, but have a pair of Time RXS Carbon on the way for no other reason than I fancied a change with the new bike!

I have Ultegra and I am very happy with them.

I only use this bike for long rides, so comfort will be a big issue. Hoping the ultegra's will do the job.

    Thanks

When you get them, spend a bit of time making sure the cleats are aligned correctly, otherwise knee pain will be your friend. Easiest way to do this is to sit on a table or equivalent surface where your legs can dangle freely. Your thighs should be flat on the table, so your legs are bent at a 90 deg angle. Once you're in this position, look down at your feet- you want your cleats set up to let your feet sit in this position.

I recently switched to Time pedals for their float, reputed knee friendliness, and all-round Gallic sexiness. It's love- I have feelings for them that I didn't realise a man could have for his pedals.

    lukester,

thanks for the info. Which Time pedals do you have and could you recommend a good shoe to go with them?

I have RXS Carbon's on the way, and will be using them with some Sidi Genius 6.6 Carbon shoes

I have RXS Edge pedals, there are many variants, lighter ones being more expensive. They also do a budget pedal called Xen, same float I believe as the RXS, but heavier and taller stack height.

I got mine at Wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/mc/cycle/7/Time/Pedals_-_Road_Clip-In/

As regards shoes, any shoe that has a 3 bolt Look style pattern (i.e. pretty much every road shoe) will take them.

    Shoes at Wiggle too :)

If you're on a budget, the dhb R1s get good reviews in a few places

thanks Tiny. Just had a look at the Sidi Genius 6.6 and they're a very very nice looking shoe but a bit (lot) out of my price range :o
I was thinking around €200 max for both pedal & shoe. Recommend anything around the €100? I'll only be using them for long cycles.

Shimano RO-86 shoes would be fine (I had the '99s that seem to be discontinued and they were very comfy), and the RXS Carbon Pedals get you close to 200 (you could also go for the RXS Edge and save a few quid)

-note, I only have the expensive Sidi's cos I got a great deal on them second hand!

+1 on the time rxs pedals. I've had them about a year and have had no trouble with them.

About shoes - you really need to try some on before you buy. The width of the shoes is really important - standard sidis are quite narrow - if you've a wide foot they won't be comfortable.
