If I Had the #1 pick???

I've been hearing several theories about what's the best course of action for the Lions.

Ideally, I'd use that first rounder, and maybe some other picks and try to make a deal with a team where I could get some lessor draft picks (i.e Herschel Walker) and some proven NFL talent at key positions.

To pay one player coming out of college an enormous amount of money before he's played a down in the league is a huge gamble. For every Peyton Manning or Orlando Pace, there's a Tim Couch, David Carr and Courtney Brown. If you give a top pick to a team that is middle of the pack or upper echelon but is one or two pieces away from greatness, that team might in turn have enough depth to help the Lions stock their team with needed average to good NFL players.

In this day and age of free agency, once the Lions become .500 they can then become a player in conversations for available free agent talent at key positions.

Or, as hard as it is to do they could attempt to trade the #1 pick for multiple draft picks over the next 2 years and try to build entirely through the draft.

    What you think?

Who wants the #1 pick this year? If you had the number 1 pick, you'd trade it. But if you tried trading it to me, why would I want it?

This year doesn't have a player worth trading to number 1 for, in my opinion.

There's the added advantage for the Lions that if they just go ahead and pick their guy at number 1, probably Stafford, they can have him signed before the draft and they can research every conceivable part of his background to almost guarantee that they won't screw up - you don't get time to do that for every player in the draft, and they could easily miss further down.

It really is a horrible year to have that pick, especially when you know that next years draft is going to be so rich in talent.

Bad year to finish last in the NFL (isn't every year a bad year to finish last?) - the #1 pick of the draft is such a burden for a team to take on, especially when your team is in need of a complete overhaul. Fair enough, when there's a HUGE prospect coming out of college you can make that pick but in years where there is no clear #1 guy, such as this one, you'd be better off trading down.

I've heard a couple of analysts suggest that Detroit let the clock run out on their pick and see where it takes them. Not a horrific idea to be honest but I'm pretty sure they're going to take Stafford. Logically he'd be their choice.

to repeat what I've said elsewhere, lions went through 5 QBs last year so they need somebody to protect the QB. Gotta be a LT, I prefer Monroe over Smith but I'd prefer them to hold off until next year to pick the QB cos there'll be at least three and possibly four good uns coming out. Plus Culpepper-Johnson could prove quality!
