Ford Puma ECU

I noticed that the remote for my beloved Ford Puma 1.7 wasn't working. The boot was also remaining locked. I took it up to the Ford dealers, expecting them to recode the zapper (worked in the past). Unfortunately they say the ECU needs to be replaced. It will cost about €1,000.
Is it a waste of money to replace the ECU in an eleven year old car? Any point in looking for a second hand ECU?
(Respect to the garage- they fit me in at the last minute and wouldn't charge me for looking at it)

You can usually recode the zapper yourself through a series of key turns and button presses. I'd try this first, seems a bit off that the ecu needs to be replaced.

Sorry I should also mention that an orange light started flashing on the dashboard, saying the doors were open. That's the first time I had seen that light flashing.

You should be able to pick an ecu for your car in the uk for about a 100 euros. Do some research on the web or order a manual and diy it.
Another thing I have found is diagnostics are not always correct. It's the easy way for the dealer to "plug" in the car and just read the codes.
Electrics are generally just a case of corrosion or loose connectors and your car is quite old. However these things can take time to find so dealers don't want to get involved, they just want to swap boxes. If you do a bit of research and check the wiring harness and the ecu you might find the problem.
It might be something as simple as a faulty door switch reporting a door is open and not allowing the ecu to lock the doors.
