so whats the story with it, do you need sumting like sky digital and it works as a recorder or does it pick up its own tv stations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

I'm not fully up to date with it myself, but I believe you can pick up the DTT signal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

I think it will only pick up free to air channels, there was a big thread on this before a while ago.

That's if you're trying to pick up the UK Freeview signal, because that was the only signal supported. Now it supports the Irish Digital signals (DTT). Sorry, that's the best way I could put it, I don't know much about this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

And what would be on this DTT signal? Channel wise i mean. Anything decent? If all i can get is TG4 and TV3 then i think i'll just stick with my good old sky hd.

If they do indeed work with our DTT(And i dont there have been any Irish confirmations on boards yet), i think they will be launched here. IIRC, i think i saw somewhere on boards that someone had emailed sony ireland about this issue, and, apparently, they said it was their intention to launch play tv here when it was compatible and seeing as it is now supposed compatible, i guess it will be launched here in the not so distant future:)

    More noob questions.

Does RTE in HD exist? Otherwise what exactly would play TV upscale to HD for us?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

if all you have at the moment is the 4 free irish channels is there any point to it? will it upscale them? will it somehow pick up other channels?

    a big thicko.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 79 ✭✭Peiking Duck

RTÉ in HD does not exist. It will pick up RTÉ One, Two, TV3, TG4, Radio 1, 2FM, Lyric FM and RnaG but only assuming you can get a DTT signal. I may pick it up myself purely as a PVR for the Irish channels.

You should check out the Terrestrial forum with any queries:
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=56

They would know if you can get any reception in your area and what stations are being trialed at the moment.

Sorry in advance for beinG thick :o:D

but what is Playtv?. How do you get tv stations through your PS3??????????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,373 ✭✭✭ongarite

Looks like you can only watch MPEG-4 stations but you can't record them at the moment.

You can also watch MPEG-2 stations if they are available to you (close to the border and parts of the east coast). Recording has been disabled? That would make it useless as a PVR

Can you pick up the channels you get on those lidil dishes with this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 79 ✭✭Peiking Duck

Any aerial will do if you are within range of a DTT tranmitter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭DrEvil

I bought it today €99 in Game. Works after updating to 1.10, recording and EPG don't work.

Yeah, a Guinea Pig finally. So you are just getting the terrestrial stations then?

    Whats EPG then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

Well what whatever the feck it is with my samsung tv, i cannot get a decent reception with my rabbit ears with the booster. i'd really like to get the playtv.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭bush

So how many channels are you getting?

An EPG is the Electronic Programme Guide, i.e. it tells you whats on TV now and whats on next, like Sky and other Digital TV providers. DTT is still in trial so that maybe why there isn't an EPG.

You can only pick up RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3 and TG4. At the moment it seems inda pointless getting the PlayTV device as you can't use it as a PVR, unless of course you want Digital quality TV from the RTEs and TV3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭DrEvil

I've a 32 inch LG HDTV with a inbuilt digital tuner that picks up the same channels you can hear them it can't display them but the EPG does work on it.

PlayTV Works great with my PSP and it does have some PVR functionality. You can pause and rewind live TV but no recording :( I'm using an indoor antenna living near UCD getting about 93 - 96% signal level

Not just cities. Where are you?
    Limeirck suburbs.

Come to think of it my da can pick up the sound but no picture so it must be running in our area.

Just need to decide if its worth spending 50 euro on this to get cornation street in digital :D

Are the channels just digital or High Def.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 79 ✭✭Peiking Duck

    No high def.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,734 ✭✭✭✭noodler

So basically, if someone in Dublin buys this, all they can do is pause Live boradcasts from RTE/TV3/TG4?

Is there any other advantage over a coathanger in the back of a TV?

Widescreen broadcasts, digital picture so no ghosting, or fuzzyness (subject to signal level).

The big one for me is proper widescreen pic, and the fact my analogue signal is quite grainy.

So has many people got this?

Is it still only the Irish channels being received?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭smooch71

Haven't a clue what any of you are talking about.

I'll stick with Sky + HD methinks

I got the PlayTV from Argos, for 99. I think it's cheaper from Play.com though. I'm just impatient.

I got the UPC\NTL\Cablelink cut off a while ago, because I was just watching 2.5 men on comedy central, so this suits me a bit better. I wasn't happy paying 50 quid for that.

The signal I had in Citywest was REALLY bad in analogue, but since I got the PlayTV the picture is excellent, faultless. It's RTE1, 2, TV3, and the TG4 is a test card at the moment. Also 4 radio stations, coming across clear as a bell.

Here's a good description of it

    Thanks,

I'm still a bit confused, call me thick, the Argos site says " Play TV brings loads of free digital channels to your Playstation 3 and does much, much more besides"

Is this true? Do you get "loads of free digital channels"??

The impression I'm getting from the thread is that all you can get is the Irish terrestrial channels.

Does this thing give you HD? These channels don't broadcast in HD anyway.

Also, do you need an NTL (or whoever) to recieve these channels before you can pause them etc with your PS3?

PlayTV at the moment can get the four Irish channels. It will be able to take HD if and when RTE start broadcasting in it. Boxer were supposed to be doing the subscription channels but pulled out.

The signal is digital and either works or it doesn't. No more bad pictures, unless your TV is a hunk of crap.

All you need is any kind of aerial, like the rabbit ears ones. That is enough to pick up the broadcast.
