Does anyone else think there should be a limit on the amount of pages people can print at a time?

Theres nothing worse than being stuck behind some prick who seems to be printing a copy of the Bible for themselves and all their family.

i do indeed. each student should have a printing limit, according to their course, that if they surpass they have to pay a fee on ever page printed. the limit would be what would be expected in normal college year +50-100 to allow for losses and reprints. they would be unlimited for people with sight problems.

the backgrounds of all the pcs in the college should also remind people to print in black and white (especially slides) and if printing slides from powerpoint to put at least 4 per page. if the notes don't come out properly in black and white students should print the slides as handouts.

I agree with most of those proposals. I would generally when printing powerpoint slides print four slides per page however with some subjects there would be graphs which are difficult to see in small slides so maybe that idea mightn't suit everyone.

I would agree wholeheartedly with fining students who print excesively. I think anyone who prints more than 75 pages at a time should be fined. That should go someway to eradicating the problem

It'd be great if they could limit the amount of sheets printed each time, say to 75 as said above. So then someone can print out the first 75 pages of the Bible, join the end of the queue, and print the next 75 pages, and so on.

i know earlier in the year, I had a 200 page report that i needed to print off, so I did it in stages, with 4 sheets to a page - and it was still so slow. if people are considerate, and print stuff off that they know will take ages in stages, it would go someway to tackling the huge lines when someone is there for ages

i have to agree with you guys

the reason most of the printers are shagged is because of excessive printing. its not fair on other students who only need to print notes for a couple of lectures.

there has to be some sort of solution to putting a limit on each student number per week or something to that affect anyway because in my opinion it has become ridiculous at the moment

the ucc hierarchy are looking to cutting costs and introducing printing fees....theres the solution, the majority of students cant complain to introducing measures like these

But if a set fee is brought in for all students, say 20 euro a year, then it won't decrease printing, but increase - as people will want to get value for their money.

Its a simple economic idea - give students an incentive to stop printing unnecessary pages, and introduce a charge per sheet, like 1 cent every page. That way it won't be too expensive for students and it will stop idiots printing off e-mail jokes etc, thats a waste of ink for the college.

That's my idea anyway, borrowed off my economics lecturer :)

A charge like would be hard enough to implement, a set fee is much easier.

I have a load of notes to print off, and even at that I keep them to four or six a page for ppt presentations. I'd find it pretty annoying that lecturers put the notes up and then to charge us for notes that we need, if something like a 1c charge came in. Free education??

It would be very easy to put a programme into the server that has the printing on it to limit the number of pages a person can print at a time, or per week.

FFS we're looking at lectures being cut, the part time work in the Library is cut and your complaining about 1 cent per page cost, you pay for photocopying don't you?? If your in the engineering faculty and use all your pages you pay to be given more printing.
UCC needs 12 MILLION more just to keep us at the standard we were last year. I'd rather pay a few hundred euros extra a year and get a good education against paying nothing and getting a siht one.

rebel girl might feel that was personal, it wasn't, I'm just sick of walking around college and hearing all these ostritches with their heads stuck in the sand thinking that moaning about paying fees and paying for printing will magically make money appear - it won't, get over it, get on with your exams and think of ways to help UCC find money. And just to show how wonderfully un - anti rebel girl I am :p I agree with her about a printing limit - it should be 75 pages, that way anyone who prints double sided would get 150 pages printed before they are automatically logged off. -- Should there be a 5 min time delay so they can't cheat by logging off and on again immediately while standing at the printer??

    ok rant over, as I wrote above people should be looking for ways to save UCC money so I'd better put one forward myself;
    Every pc in college, either open access or a dedicated pc should have a undeletable word document on it's desktop with relevant screen shots that shows people how to;
    1. (For the lecturers) How to create powerpoint slides or pdf files - the most common form of notes made available to students as far as I have seen - that are optimised for printing --
2 or 4 slides per page
minimse or better still completely remove all background colour - yes it needs colour to make things clear in lectures but I have ppt notes from this year where the lecture lectured in colour and the notes printed off with 2 slides per page and in plain black and white.
    2. (For people printing)How to optimise the printers,
set up a printer to print both sides of a page, not many students seem to know how to do this
reduce the clarity of the images - most documents don't need 600 dpi (dots per inch) and the printers can be set to 300 dpi

I know some of this is already on a sheet stuck to the printers but it's not much use there when someone has already pressed print and is waiting at the computer, surely there is someone in the library who has sufficent it skills to create a very simple word document??

(posts and hopes rebel girl won't be able to track him down )

Ah dude seriously, 1 cent a page is not gonna kill you! Its not even the money aspect, just the inconvenience that would stop people printing off useless stuff. If there's a two hundred page document that you need, it would cost you 2 euro - thats less than what they charge you for 30 photocopies!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭Aodan83

1c a page seems like a pretty fair price to pay.
Paying per page is would work out better than a set fee. Not everyone will use the full 10 or 20 euro if there is a set fee. Although working it on a credit basis would be a pretty good idea too.

For your info quiettsailor, I never use the photocopiers! I can hardly afford to go to college, and I'm not "poor" enough to get a grant that would help immensely! the fact that the fee has gone up to 1500 means that I'm struggling to pay it. Trying to get a job at this time as you can guess is quite difficult! I can't afford to stay in Cork, so I have to commute every day, which is a pain in the backside! Even at that, it is still a big amount of money and inconvenience to be taking a train and a bus every day. Can't drive because I firstly cannot afford to get driving lessons and second because of the cost of insurance. Thats not me saying it as a sob story, it is fact and explains a bit

I bet there is quite a bit besides printing that the college can cut down on, but then again politics etc won't leave it happen. And why do we need 12 million more, was there nobody looking at the books, or were they following the government line that there would not be a recession. Any smart person could see that the bottom was going to fall out of the building boom, unfortunately there is nobody like that in Dail Eireann!

For all the people that are so bloody unconscious about money, I am f**king sick to death of people saying oh 2 euro won't hurt you to spend, we'll pay the extra euro or two per day, well it all adds up - it is the college administration and the government in general who were willing to throw money at problems and see money go down into a black hole. They are the ones at fault for screwing the system up, they should be the ones that fix the problem rather than throwing the problem onto the students. They should be able to find the money to fix the problem without affecting the students.

If they cut back 200,000 a month during the boom times, that would not affect things too badly, they would have had 2,400,000 by the end of the year in savings. But instead they decide to cut things drastically rather than doing sensible things. This rant is also directed quite a bit at the government in general that are f**king up the country more than ever, if they had abided by a policy like that during the good times, of making every euro count, then we would not be in the mess.

Nobody seems to see that small cuts add up, putting a limit on pages rather than charging can work. It is the same with the government, it is the people who are stuck in the middle not poor enough to get grants etc, and not rich enough to be comfortable are getting hammered. They put stupid charges on people who are already struggling to meet ends meet, and expect them to be ok. I'm sick of it, I agree that people are sticking their head in the sand, but if small cuts are made in a number of places, cuts small enough not to drastically effect the student body, it will add up pretty quickly to the 12 million. The student body are not at fault for the college needing the 12 million, so they should not be responsible for fixing the problem

Welcome to my world rebelgirl :p, I'm a mature student so i gave up a job to go back to college so I don't get a grant and I'm paying fees. Fees plus accomodation come to well over 10,000 euro per year before food, light, heat, textbooks and socialising for anyone out there that's curious. So I empathise with ya'

Are you in a 9-5 course that would allow you to carpool with someone? It might be cheaper than the train

From what I gathered from the Presidents speech is that there is a shortfall of 12 million from last year rather than needing 12 million extra this year.

Agreed but where - terminate all the employees on contract? Reduce the number of open access pc's (Cuts down electricity bills), reduce the heating to the college rooms - all of those will save money but it'll create hardships for students as well as staff. The fees collected for each student don't remain with that college, most of them go to the government and are distributed elsewhere in Ireland. If those fees were ringfenced for the use of the college that generates them no college would be short of money. Why don't each student sign a decleration that if the government doesn't leave this money with the college we'll vote them out of power in the next election. oh wait a damn minute they might actually want that to happen ;)

    Agreed

Mine isn't a nine to five course, anybody I know from home stays above or doesn't drive so I'm screwed there.

I'd love to know who is trying to fix the 12 million shortfall, do they have someone maybe an economist who can look at it rather than lawyers looking at it. As for the Gov, they have plenty of lawyers but no economists, people who actually know what they are talking about - I was watching something recently where they had three leading economists, and they were able to come up with solutions, and they had a positive debate, where one came up with a solution and the other two agreed or disagreed or offered advice. There is no leadership

I'm still wondering, why could they not see the 12 million shortfall coming? I agree about the thing where the fees for each college should stay with each college, but then again, would each college have the ability to be able to adequately manage those funds.

If it is shortfall of 12 million rather than needing 12 million, then cut back. First of all, I'd make sure that all the PC's are off at night, they go on standby rather than off, and that is why they are all so slow for being on for too long. That would save money, simple easy method. Cutting the heating, put it down a degree rather than cutting it out, would not cause major hardship, but would save quite a bit of money.Cuts do not have to be as severe as above to actually save money. It is about being more efficient with the resources that they have rather than drastic cuts. I'd love to see the actual books for the college, how the figures add up.

It is the same for the national economy, panic cuts that are killing the economy, rather than putting money into the economy. By putting in the extra taxes and charges, people are less likely to spend money, therefore the retail outlets will have less sales, causing them to have to lay off people. As a result of the low sales, the manufacturers will have to lay off people. Those people laid off are going to have to get money from the gov, which immediately makes them lose money. As well as that, they will have lost the VAT from the products, and the PAYE from the workers salaries.

Obama has the right idea in the US, giving tax cuts, with encourage spending in the economy, boosting sales, creating new jobs, the cycle goes on.

BTW, I'm not studying any business subject, but on the matter of the fees being given to the Gov rather than going to the college, so much for free education!!

People seem to have no concept of money at the moment and that really annoys me!

    Ownership, accountability and responsibility!

Something has to be done about this issue!

The photocopiers on two floors of the Library were broken so the only one working was on the ground floor. The queue was out the door, and I was stuck behind this bitch who printed a whole book, plus hundreds more pages of handouts. I was stuck behind her for a good 40 minutes, I'd say she printed a good 500 pages front and back.
No worry on her either, no sorry for taking so long, sorry I couldn't spread it out over a couple of sessions etc...Nothing, she was smiling away to herself.

UCC authorities - bring in printing charges, just to hinder these idiots please!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭Bellies

Free printing is class in UCC, studied up the country last year and they charge 5c on every sheet that's printed!!!

huge monet to be made here.

    How does it work???

Well each student has their student number and a password.
It's the same process as always for printing, but there is an account attached to your student number that needs to be topped up on a daily basis. (Depending on the amount of printing you have)

There are two ways of topping up:

    1. handing money over to "the printing office" and they'll credit your account by €X.

    2. Simply top-up online by Visa or Laser!!

Worked well but was a pain in the ass!!

It's only a matter of time before UCC adopt this tactic!

Thank fcuk i'm done with printing!! :D

its a bit sneaky bringing it in in July - students won't know about it for a while. The printers have the software set up, I wsa using a printer today and they will have a part with your student number and a animated dollar symbol, showing 0 at the moment!

They decided to do this now to minimise the outcry from students and the SU. The outgoing SU officers are finished, the incoming SU officers haven't really started yet. Most students are too preoccupied worrying about exam results right now to care about anything else. That's why the college waited until now.

It's really gonna suck not having free printing anymore. That was one of the best things about UCC - we were the only university that had free printing. :(

It was a good move alrite! Bye bye free printing :(:(:( i'd say I'm gonna have a big enough bill, I can't believe that printing one sided (what we all need to do for essays etc) is costing more!

More than likely to save the college money. People will print double sided if cheaper and the college will save money on paper. Its a bit of a balls alright. 12 slides per page from now on for me!

I was going through the UCC forum, and I found some interesting figures posted by SU Deputy Pres

6million pages at 5c per page will generate €300,000, which is the cost to print 23/24m at the moment.

So basically the charges are a money making thing for the college!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,681 ✭✭✭confusticated

Of course they are - the college is massively in debt sure. They're trying to make money any way they can.

Jeez. I never understood why UCC would let students print for free. Its so ridiculous seeing as most people dont understand how expensive it is to print, and how wasteful it is.

Im glad theyre bringing in the charges,

also- is everyone is ucc unable to write things down or are they just lazy.

I understand for intense projects etc you need to print out pages

but when it comes to daily lectures on slides. in fairness. how long would it take to just look it up and write it down onto your notebook off the screen. it would save paper and for those worried about money it'll save that too.

Most lecturers put the slides up on the site later, so it would be easy to look it up and write it down off the computer screen.
