Just want to see what people think about a quote my dad got for changing his car which seems very low to me.

He has a 2003 1.4 Skoda Octavia owned from new with 30k miles all services etc and was looking to change to a 2 or 3 year old used Jag X type.
Dealer said he'd give him 2.5 to 3k trade in on his car which seems ridiculously low to me considering it's condition and mileage (no accidents, amd no cosmetic damage).

Does this sound like the dealer just didn't want to be stuck with the car to sell and gave him a PFO quote ??

What do you think the car is worth? What were you expecting?
The old 1.4 Octavia however good a car it is,it's not the most desirable car on the market. If i was going out to buy that car in the morning I'd be looking to pay no more than 4K - and that would be at a push.

I'm guessing its the model that's pre facelift? (think that may have been 04)

I think the dealer is aware that he could be holding on to your car for quite some time and he is hedging his bets. I'd say you'll struggle to get much of a better trade in price as the garage have to give some kind of warranty with the car.

Buy the car straight for much less than the asking price and sell the skoda cheap privately. It will work out better. realistically, Id say you were getting close to zero for the car by trading it in.
So, price the new car straight, and see can you work out better.
Also, I cannot see you getting any better offers on a trade in really.

    Trade in value is irrelevant.

How is the X-type priced against others? What is the cost to change?

I was offered 4000 euro for my 98 Merc a few months ago. I turned it down and traded it into another garage for 2500 euro.

But I got very nice car in return :)

Very true, it's all down to the cost of change...The rest is only a paper transaction...

    People often miss this point!

I know someone who got offered €5k for an '05 1.9TDI ovtavia with 60k miles and FSH!

As others have said, Trade in value is irrelevant, its to Cost to change figure which you should focus on.
