(i also have this in the state benefits section if there's a rule delete the sate benefits one)

soon to be unemployed and start to get social welfare. If I want to start a business at what point do I lose dole. In other words If I sell something and make €1 profit and never sell an items again do i lose everything. Do u have the opportunity to find out if a biz is feasible before u lose everything?
I've asked an enterprise board rep this and they didnt know. Waiting on a reply (weeks) from social welfare dept

Here is the situation (as I understand it) from the point of view of the dole office.

If you are working for yourself, you are not seeking employment, and therefore not entitled to dole !!!

I dont doubt your intentions, but, for example, if you were claiming benefit, and made a few quid on the side, (but not enought to survive on), you might be less inclined to sign off, and so might forget to mention the business earning to the tax office, and ... and you might get into a "grey/black" area, if you know what I mean, and I'm sure that you do.

yea i know what you mean but this is the situation so, I have an idea that might work i.e. get me off the dole and may employ a few other people but its not worth taking the chance to see if it even works, so stay on the dole?

just go for it sign off for one day a week while testing your idea.. even if you are taking two day but be positive and dont look for reasons to fail before you start.

This is what im trying to find out. Can I do that? Or by my very actions looking to start a biz, im seen as a soletrader and cant sign on at all?

This is the situation and question.

Im entitled to SW for one year from the day Im made unemployed because I have been paying PRSI for the last 20 years.

I go on the dole start a biz and make my 1st trade.
Because of that action am I now a soletrader and lose previous status even if I trade for only one week for example.

So after that week I go to sign on but I am now deemed as a soletrader and the previous paye status doesnt count.

    Hi,
Strictly speaking every day you are not actively looking for work (Monday - Saturday), then you should sign off and lose 1/6th of your dole payment for that week. But as we all know it is possible to look for work every day, for an hour or two via the web, papers etc. and then you can trial your business idea for the rest of the time or on Sundays

I think you can do both. However consider if you got offered a full time job would you take it? If the answer is no, I would rather work on my business then you are not actively looking for work and should sign off.

    Best of luck.

Second that. Just go for it and focus on your new business. If anything, the welfare office should be thankful that you are doing this. I wish you all the best.
