Well was looking to buy a ps3 and was going to go buy one second hand and while looking through i noticed that alot of them seemed to say fualty and that there was something wrong with the disk drive?

Is this a regular flaw with the ps3 or was it just a certain model or batch of them?

    Any help appreciated

It can happen to PS3 models but it's not that common. Overall it's a very well built machine.

Where are you finding second-hand PS3 for sale that are knowingly being sold as faulty?

If they were cheap, I wouldn't mind picking one up and fixing it myself.

as with all faults on all consoles you'll always here of the bad ones, for every one bad machine there could be 20, 30, 50 maybe 100 good machines (i'm picking those numbers of out my arse btw).

i'm not sure if the problem is spread across all PS3 models but it seems to me that 60gig ones are the most effected due to them being pretty much launch day machines.

just typed it into google and found a few

only noticed a few of the prices but they were around €40 i think

Remember, if I type it into google and find 5,000 complaints of faults. Its still nothing compared to the actual number of PS3s out there (20m)-wouldn't even be a 1% failure rate.

Picking those figures out of my arse too (not the 20m) and am not saying a 1% failure rate is acceptable either.

1 % seems reasonable though! You get ripped off more at the petrol pumps!:p
    (+/- 5% tolerance or something)

I read somewhere a while back that the ps3 had a 2-3% failure rate, don't know if thats still the case now though.

Imo I think it's a very reliable piece of kit, very well built :)

Get it. As already mentioned, only a small percentage of PS3s get this problem. I've had 2 PS3s now, (one was a 60GB, the other a 40GB, argubally the most prone to getting these problems) and have had no problems with either.

When you read about the number that stop working, remember that people talk about it when it happens to their machine. Nobody's going to make a thread saying that it works fine.

For the past few days my PS3 won't detect any game, BR or DVD disc. According to some articles, it's a dust problem on the laser/magnifier. Apart from GTA4 and a few movies the thing was rarely used!
I'll have to get a replacement drive by the looks of it.

Try the HDD Format as a last resort. (Obv you will lose all files that aren't backed up but prob won't be a problem since you never used it).

would a disk cleaner help, had that problem with my old ps2 and it sorted my problem very quickly.

gunner1251 I bought an old ps2 for my 5yr old boy, after 4 months it wouldn't read any discs so I brought it back without any problems and they gave me a new (2nd hand) model along with a new warranty, I'm sure the same would apply if you took the risk, got his one in Gamestop.

Thanks noodler. I'll try restoring to system default first then I'll try the HDD format option.

Don't smoke but there is a ceiling fan in the same room as the ps3. That might be the cause of dusk getting into it.

Dexterm99 try a disk cleaner before formatting your system, might just need a quick clean.

Apparently not one with brushes though.

Got an 80Gig in Xtravision in Maynooth. Disc drive went in first month.

Replaced no bother without receipt or anything.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. They rock and are much better built than 360 (which I also have).

So much quieter even if you install games on 360. PS3 is practically silent.

So it just comes down to games. I wouldn't buy a PS3 just for the features and silence if the 360 had the games I wanted to play.

If both have the games you want then I'd get PS3 over 360 TBH. If you play online a lot, you'd probably do it the other way around though. I don't play PS3 games online much but I do with 360 because almost every game has an online mode on 360 and the games I have on 360 are FPS which I'd be more likely to play online anyway.

I still don't own many PS3 games because I buy for 360 if they are on both consoles.

Tried cleaning with warm water, toothpaste and then applying wax. Nothing worked.
restoring defaults and formatting dident work either :-(
looks like I'll have to call Sony as it's about 18 months old.

Worth doing that first before I go to the hassle of sending it away to get repaired...

    drool....
Of course a disk. Why, would you clean your console with toothpaste?

Not only would it have a glossy finish, it would also smell minty fresh!
