    Hi All,
Erm, quick question - how many people in TCD have either an iPod Touch or an iPhone, and how many of those have jailbroken theirs or would do so?
Trying to figure out if this is a widespread popular thing or just an engineering/CS thing.

Well, I notice a lot of CS/Engineers on this forum more so than Arts students, so I don't think this is gonna help! Plus how would you distinguish the votes between CS/Eng. and others???

I was planning on thinking that CS/Eng people would have jailbroken their phones while non-CS/Eng would just use them ;)

that's what I thought - but this poll isn't gonna tell you that. There are Arts students with jailbroken iPods and Engineers that haven't jailbroken theirs!

I know, but it would give me a very rough idea of whether they were widespread or whether they were more like daddy-bought BMWs :D

I think rough would be an understatement!

Whats the point of the thread?

It's been a while since I was an undergrad kearnsr ('97 :D) and I don't have an idea of how many undergrads are walking round with these things and randomly stopping people to search their pockets seems a tad ... rude ;)

but there must be a reason for wanting to know

Actually it was personal curiosity - I'm writing the iPhone client mentioned here at the moment and was wondering what the actual demand for it would be, whether there's loads of people or whether there'd be three :D
(The client gets written either way, and on the same schedule, I was just wondering is all).

What does an ipod touch jail broken do?

Amongst other things, it allows you to install an app without going through the AppStore. That's kindof important for the metakall client because it needs to run in the background to do its thing and official AppStore Apps aren't allowed do that. Even the new 3.0 SDK only allows for push notification instead of true background processes.
