Turning down the volume of my driver

I hit my new driver great, but the noise off it would wake the dead! Basically it hurts my ears, a really loud snap sound. From looking around on the web, it seems the best solution is to remove the shaft and fill the head with foam or cotton wool, which would only add a tiny amount of weight, and should dampen the sound considerably.
Question is, anyone have any idea where I could get this done?

    doesn't sound that complicated
have you considered doing it yourself?

    screw off the shaft
stuff the head with newspapers etc
    screw the shaft back on
    resume playing

newspaper is an option, but the best way to fcuk up months worth of research and development by the manufacturer is to fill it with water. That way when you swing the driver, the water will produce lovely calming sounds.
Seriously though, i think you should either put up with the sound of the driver in the form of ear plugs or something or else you should change the driver. Filling it with anything other than air will not produce the result that the club was made for.

Indeed. Have you thought about using the space inside your driver as extra storage space for tees etc.? :p

Incredibly, there was a study in the British Medical journal recently on just this topic:

    http://www.livescience.com/health/090107-golf-clubs-loud.html

    Money quote:
"All six titanium drivers produced sounds greater than the safe limit with the Ping G10 topping out at 130 decibels or similar to a gunshot or firecracker. See the full results here. "Our results show that thin-faced titanium drivers may produce sufficient sound to induce temporary or even permanent cochlear damage in susceptible individuals," Buchanan concluded

This is why I'm asking. I already have tinnitus from years of going to gigs and don't want it to get any worse. I could just wear earplugs while teeing off (already wear them religiously to gigs) but from looking around on the net, I've found lots of people who've 'stuffed' the head of the driver with foam or sponge or cotton and it hasn't affected play, just drops the sound considerably.
Might drop into a golf shop next week and see if they can do it?
Oh and thanks for all the witty replies :D
    Keep 'em coming...

I assume it's the Cobra driver you're using?

Dreadful sound of them. This is not the case with other drivers. There is a smash off all Titanium clubs but nothing like the Cobra. My advice, trade it in for something else rather than go to serious hassle trying to fix what you have and risk rendering it useless and worthless.

You've gotta be careful. Some of them are left handed threads.
But if the shaft breaks then you can use an old broom handle........just nail it onto the head.

    :(

I've heard of this, you can use cotton wool but once you put it in you won't be able to get it out again. I've also heard of wool/yarn being used, the advantage is that its possible to remove it again if you want to.
There's two ways of doing it -
Remove the shaft and put the material in through a hole in the hosel
or leave the shaft in and drill a small hole in the sole of the club, put in the yarn and then plug the hole again.

What might be worth trying is putting a couple of strips of lead tape on the sole - I've read that it will change the frequency of the sound - it might be worse or better, I don't know.

The storage space in my driver is filled with divot mix for those par 3's that I'm too embarrassed to use a 7 iron on...

What about earmuffs? That could be the solution to conno's earlier post about head gear too! Earmuffs with zips in them, so you could store balls, tees, snacks & stuff in there!
Wonder if the Patents Office is open tomorrow????

Can't decide whether C16 is a brilliant troll, full of subtle strange characterisations ... or he's just David Brent. Either way ... enjoying the strange world we get to visit.

If it comes to a vote to be mod conno you have mine.
    On a serious note,
Would there be any benifit in changing my R7 driver from a grafite shaft to a steel one? Was using a steel shafted old callaway driver on the range the other week and I liked the feel of it a bit better than a grafite.

for someone who is as u say relatively new to game maybe u should work on not ticking experienced members on the forum off who give good sound valuable advice everyday !
