    Hey Boardsie's,

Well I have a question for you and I'm looking for some advice...

So my Octavia (not RS) came factory fitted with 225/45/R17....

Now they need changing but I am looking for a tyre that can give me a comfortable ride, especially with the typical crap Irish roads. A tyre fitting establishment said I should go for a 235/45/R17. Does anyone have ane advice on what would be the best option...

    Cheers

Stick to the factory fitted size....increasing the tyre width will not help make the ride more comfortable. Check your tyre pressures too, make sure they arent over inflated.

Did it come with 16s? Check by the door or on the fuel filler flap and see if they came with 16inch, then maybe get a set of them, only way for more comfort is a higher sidewall tyre

It came factory fitted with R17. If the sidewall increase is that changing from 45 to 55. ?

Changing to 16'' .... I don't really want to have to get a new set of 16 Alloys and tyre's

Are they runflat on it now?

I considered changing to 55's on the same size wheel but was told that size was usually a Jeep tyre - dunno how true that is but it would be a fair bit bigger and could rub against the arches.

What brand are on it at the moment. I've changed to Dunlop SportMaxx and find them to be quiet and giving a slightly smoother ride (could be due to the extra thread depth on the new tyres though)

    I just got 4 x Falken 205/55 x 16's + 2 x 225/50 x 17's, from Camskills over the net.

Added in balancing and fitting, total came to Eur 455 iirc. And I didn't have to leave the house - including the fitting ! (he came to me).

Interestingly, the 205's are for my Porsche, the 225's for ........a 1.9 Saab. Diesel  Madness, I tell ya.

The Porsche did have 225 x 17's, but I had a spare set of std rims and put them on, instead. Oh my God, it's like a new car. Quieter, more comfortable, nicer steering. The 17's made a truck out of it.

Consider this: 1993, Porsche rated 205 x 55 x 16 as suitable on a car that did 156mph. How is that now, on a diesel, it's somehow thought necessary to have F1 sized tyres on cars that, well, let's be honest.........rarely go more than half that.

And this big-tyre nonsense extends to 4 x 4's and motorcycles too, btw.

OP, so, not saying you should change your rims, btw, but a more modest tyre (my brother swears by Vredestein..), in a higher profile (if it'll fit)...would probably do you very nicely.

Well the R17 that are on my Skoda aren't run-flats.

Galwaytt..Does Camskill deliver to your door, fit and balance them or was it done though a third party in Ireland?. I was looking on Camskill and they have 235/45/17 Goodyear Eagles for €102 per tyre. and Falken 225/45/17 http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m4b0s16p6205 for €80. I've heard Falken are a good brand. You mentioned std rims, would they be 205/55/16? Must look into where I can get std rims so.

Camskill just do the tyres, delivered.

There's a mobile tyre service here in Co Galway, Cloonboo Tyre Services. You'd need to ring them. Now maybe it's too far for you, but, hey, maybe a day-trip and let the SO off in town for an hour whilst you do the wheel-thing.

As for std rims....only if you have them handy, or free. Otherwise, just buy the tyres from Camskill and get them fitted and be over with it.

You'd need to check for example, that a 16" rim would fit over your brakes.....
