Don't know were to post this but I'll chance my arm here.

I'm thinking of leaving this country and see if I can get a job somewhere else.

I would love to go over to South Africa, but I'm not sure what the Visa req's are over there? I was wondering weather there's anyone that might know anything about this or know of people that applyed for Visa's over there?

    Thanks,
    Newkid

Okay, have you given this any real thought? I know it is a beautiful country and all but there is far more to it then just that.. Think things are bad here? South Africa has an unemployment rate of 21.7% which is double that of Ireland! South Africa has been experiencing one of the worst 'brain drains' in the world for many years with most graduates not even waiting until the ink is dry on their degrees before emmigrating, according to certain statistics SA has lost 25% of graduates to the USA alone. When these factors are added to the positive discrimination policies, which are quite common, it makes it very difficult for caucasians to get jobs in SA.

When added to the fact that 1/5 South Africans are infected with HIV/AIDS, average life expectancy for males is 49 and 48 for females it might stop looking like such an attractive work destination?! But the real clincher surely has to be the fact that South Africa is perhaps the most violent country in the world that is not presently at war! SA has a population of 49million and Ireland 4million, so just over twelve times the population of us.. But, in SA in 2006 there was 19,202 murders compared with 60 in Ireland- The Sunday World crime "journalist" Paul Williams would have a field day, as in what he constantly tells us, is murder mad Ireland; we only have 1 murder for every 320committed in SA! In the same year there was 39,304 rapes compared with just 340 in Ireland ( a ratio of 1:115), there was 197,714 robberies and aggravated robberies compared with 2,668 in Ireland (1:75).. Not exactly the sort of place where you can leave your hall door unlocked now is it?!

If none of this puts you off and you can handle the racism, crime, unemployment and you are prepared to gamble on 0.04 mm and 0.07 mm thick latex from saving your life virtually every time you become intimate with one of the locals for fear of catching AIDS well then I say go for it!! The information you require on immigrating can be found on:

In the "nice" areas, you'll still need to carry a gun, if you're white. There are some Irish areas in SA. Look around this forum for more info. Hope you like guns, because if you don't, don't go there.

As mentioned in most posts before it's not a good bet.

It was a good place for an Irish guy to go perhaps during the 80s but not now.

"Black Empowerment Policy" will also shift things against Whites looking for work, they have frequent power shortages and have to buy in power from neighbouring countries (Botswana I think), unemployment will only shoot up during the global downturn over there.

As an anecdotal case I know of a Security guard over here from SA-did Business in college over there, could only get a job working as a Prison Guard in Swaziland when he graduated and then when he came here (has Irish roots I think) he managed to get a job as a Security Guard in an Irish Hospital.

I guess there'll be some level of employment due to the World Cup but wages would be rock bottom I'd say, especially with the atrociously weak Rand.

Being South African, I sorely wanted to come on here and rip you all a new hole for all the crap being spouted about SA, but you know what, I can't, as for the most part, it's not at all inaccurate :(

This being said, I lived there for 30 years and I am fine, and had a great time.

Great place for a holiday yes, to live, not so much.

Sorry mate, a friend of mine who is South African says the same, hopefully the World Cup will improve it somewhat and expose a lot of injustices that go on their.
