Elbow Bend During Pull In Front Crawl?

    I have a question with regards to front crawl arm/albow movement.

    I currently take about 20 strokes to cover 25m and thats not great I know. I hear people talk about bending the elbow during the pull but I dont seem to be able to do that. When I stretch my arm forward and begin the pull my arm stays straight until its around my chest level. Then I bend it for the push keeping the palm pointing towards the bottom of the pool. Not sure if I'm explaining myself very well :rolleyes:.

    Am I supposed to bend my elbow during the early stages of the pull?

    The best way to swim is with a high elbow. So yes you begin the stroke with pressure from your forearm. Theres loads of underwater videos of top swimmers around on the net so watch one of them if you're trying to visualise it.

    hard to describe, without a demonstration. think of it in sweeps, with the hand alwayse leading the motion, sweep out to "catch" the water, then bend at the elbow sweeping the forearm bac down to shoulder level, the you sweep the hand back, arcing under your chest straightening and pushing to exit at hip level. Catch up drill with fins on, can help give you the time and balance to observe and change your sweep, High elbow drill will only help with the recovery really. arm is only straight at two times during the stroke, when you stretch forward to "catch" (immediately after entry) and just before your hand exits the water at your hip.
