2 weeks ago I got the van serviced.

100EURO it cost me, I though it was quite cheap. I though a service was a service. van given a clean bill of health except to get 2 tyres

    Then today,
I went up to get a new tyres as recommended by the garage.
Advanced pit stop went around the van and said I needed.
    2 shocks
    2 brake disks
    3 tyres
wheel realignment(which I will amit the van needs it)

In total 960Euro for the quote....

They said the van was a death trap... make me wonder what the previous garage did and their competence as mechanics.

    So my question is
    What constitutes a service?
Should they go over the car like advance pit stop did and let me know the problems...
I want to go back up and get my money back of them.

    What should you do?

Get a quote from someone else, because 960e sounds like an awful lot for two discs, two shocks, and three tyres.

What you should do is to go and get a second opinion on what needs to be done as from what I hear, places like the outfit you mention are great for coming up with lists of work like this that is debatable whether or not it needs doing!

Get another garage to have a look. Once they trot out the "it's a deathtrap" bs I'd be very wary of anything they say. You'd nearly know yourself from the handling and ride quality if those things needed replacement. €960 is a rip off anyway.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

i'd stay away from advance pitstop.. quoted me 140 plus labour for work another garage did for 75.

get another quote and there might not be as much wrong as advance pitstop say

a 100e service to me would mean, oil change, oil filter change, air filter change and fuel filter change and maybe all the fluids topped up.

as above i would get a second opinion and a price from the previous guy and see how they compare to the garage that recommend it.

Very possible Advance Pitstop are drumming up business. 2nd opinion required imo.

get a 2nd, or 3rd even, opinion...........they charged a young lad I know Eur1700 to do the clutch in a Civic.........:( that's just immoral, tbh.......

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I can tell similar stories especially of over charging or carrying out repairs that were not required mainly to females.

We try to steer well clear of them in work.

We have a very good relationship with fast fit, and i've even got work done by them. I must say they are a lot better than advance.

If your around Dublin, look for Ian in the Naas Road branch. He looks after me with any car i bring in there, for tyres, pads, whatever.

Its nice to be looked after by someone else for a change.

    thanks all for the replys.

Yes Advance pit stop seems like there taking the biscuit alrite.

Another thing I noticed in the quote. they never put labour cost down on it!!! so would that mean that they would add labor on top of an already ripoff quote.

I might try fast fit Naas road tomorrow or another opinion..

I was trying not to laugh at the quote they gave me, they seen the company van and though they could take the p%ss.

    Good old Ireland!!

Totally agree with the above, sounds very dear for the few bits and pieces. I also suspect that some of these tyre places often quote for new discs that don't necessarily need to be done. Shop around.

Whatever about anything else you should be able to judge the tyres for yourself if you look at the level indicator within the tyre thread.

When was the van last tested? If it's due soon I'd hold off on everything except the tyres and let them tell you what needs doing. They'll tell you whether the shocks and brakes need attention (assuming the commercial test is similar to the NCT).

Disclaimer :): Unless of course the brakes physically feel poor to you, in which case get them sorted asap.

Why do people use Fast fit & Advance? There has to be a premium to be paid for the fancy signs & advertising.
Surely a competent independent mechanic would be a better bet?

Get tyres from camskill, shocks and pads from ebay and then when they arrive, get someone to fit them!

Because they specialise in tyres/exhausts etc. and can source those things at better prices than independents I'd imagine. They also usually have the relevant items in stock there and then. I've used both and Fast Fit have been pretty good in any dealings I've had with them.

They're hardly big glassy showrooms in fairness.
