Hi does anyone know if a teacher on a temporary contract of 16 hours per week can claim social welfare.
During the school year the hours are usually much higher but in the summer obviously wont get more than 16 hours.
    Can the dole be claimed?

You can claim social welfare for the days you are not working.

But ask your social welfare office. You are still entitled to your dole but not all of it cause you are working. You should apply for rent allowance also if you are living in rented accomodation.

When you say temporary contract, do you mean you have a one year contract to teach 16 hours per week? Are you an RPT teacher? Because if you have a contract for a year you will be paid until the end of August. If it's not subbing I don't see how you could claim social welfare, i've never heard of RPT teachers signing on over the summer if this is what you are. It sounds like you do extra subbing on top of your normal hours which would have no effect on earnings/social welfare over the summer.
