    Why were you not impressed?

If there were three of them near midday then perhaps it was a training exercise. btw you make them sound like something you might (or might not) buy in Tesco's ;)

Isn't that stretch one of the Speed Enforcement Zones publically listed on the Garda website? It seems like an obvious for enforcement to me: a long, wide, straight road where inadvertent speeding could happen in the muddle of a highly residential area with several shops and schools nearby.

Some cars (well most cars) drive WAY over the limit along this road. I'm sure 80KMH would not be too much of an exaggeration for a good proportion of vehicles, especially on the downhill stretch towards the city. For an area full of houses, one of the biggest colleges in the country, shops, service stations, parks, traffic light controlled pedestrian crossings, etc......what would you expect? The road is a speeding haven!!!
Oh, and the traffic control box must have been flippin huge if three grown men could manage to hide behind it

    Why were you not impressed?

Why do they need 3? And why do they need to hide? Surely its about promoting better driving behaviour than catching people?

One very obvious garda on the road will (1) get drivers thinking about their speed (2) redirect 2 more gardai where they are needed

I do (sort of) agree with you but (playing devils advocate for a minute), one visible Garda will see most drivers throwing an anchor out the window so they can crawl past at 5mph and probably causing a crash. Instead, they published a list telling people where they would be doing speed checks so people who use those roads have been forewarned.

At the end of the day, people can whinge and moan about the inequalities of it all and the methods used but if you can't control your speed, especially in urban areas, it's entirely your own fault.

It's a problem that's often neglected actually, speeding ships, especially as it takes them so long to come to a stop they can do untold damage before hand.

Or am I just getting myself to a muddle ?
