Bikes

Anyone have a bike "stolen" from behind the 193-whatever reading room recently? Security, for some reason unknown even to themselves, have started cutting bikes off the railings with "No Bikes" signs on them, for the first time in a while apparently. Used an angle grinder to cut through my Kryptonite New York 3000 lock (which is fúcking beefy I'll have you know). Had to get it from front arch today, they had about 10 bikes all chained together there. He said from now on they'll be cutting them off regularly, and you'll have to go to the security desk in front arch to get it back.

Security guy was sound about it, told me New Square was the safest place for it, plenty of people around, open space, and the security van drives past there. There is an old thread on good places to park bikes in Trinity, I'll see if I can find it.

Hold on, are you complaining that the rules are being enforced, or am I misreading this?

Nope sorry not complaining, just giving a heads up that those "No bikes" signs have to be obeyed now, whereas before they could be ignored there safely enough.

And new square is definitely not the safest place for parking bikes. Especially in the run up to May 8th.

    I'll explain later...

    Hi,

Could anyone who has a bike removed please PM me with the details of how your bike was removed (cost of bike, cost/type of lock, date etc) as I have also been affected by this practice and I'm following this matter up with TCD authorities.

    Thanks
    D

how can you complain about them enforcing the rules? heck it sounds like a good way of secure bike storage, put a cheapo lock on it, wait for them to take it up to front arch and mind it for you :)

They have recently removed bikes from areas which until very recently had no notices prohibiting bicycles from being locked there.

Also as mentioned by the OP, the cost of these locks that are cut are not cheap. I had a lock cut which cost over €100.
put a cheapo lock on it, wait for them to take it up to front arch and mind it for you.

I take this matter seriously. I believe TCD should provide quality, secure bicycle storage facilities and I'm working to convince the authorities to provide them.

There is a swipe access only bike park behind botany bay. It has been there for years and is only accessible with a student card and has cctv.So it is provided, people just don't use it.
