NCT Tax and Insurance

    Hi all,

    Just a quick question.

My insurance for my car expired in August 2008 and I never renewed it because I was moving to Germany the week it expired.

The Tax expired in January 2009 and the NCT ran out in February 2009, and I've just left them too.

I need to get everything sorted on it again as I will be home for a while from June.

Do I need to get it insured before i tax and NCT it? I don't really want to as it'll be two months before I drive it again... but if I have no choice I will because I'd like to have it all sorted before I come home.

first off you need insurance to tax it, you would have to do it in the following order :

    1 - insure it
    2 - tax it
    3 - NCT it

2 and 3 are interchangeable iirc

If you're not back for two months then don't worry about it until them.
When you're back, insure it and get the policy details over the phone. (It'll take a few day's to get the cert & disc posted) Then fill in the insurance details on the RF100a form http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/PublicationsDocuments/FileDownLoad,489,en.pdf (you do not need an insurance cert, just the details.)

Go to your local Garda station and get the car signed off the road from Feb to whenever you come back. Then tax the car. You do not need an NCT to tax it. Then get an NCT appointment and pass it and your ready to rock.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.
