has anyone seen any woodcock at this time of year. i was driving to work yesterday and without a doubt a woodcock flew straight across me i had a perfect view of him. a lovely bird in flight.

i guess he's native as probobly the migrating woodcock would be gone by now or would they?

has anyone else made any recent woodcock sightings?

They are resident and breeding birds. I see them all year round. We get some migration from Scandinavia and Russia and Winter movement around the country but they are always here. They are very much an under-recorded species with probably more breeding pairs than realised.

its the first time i have seen one in spring to be honest. io know their is a woodcock association of ireland now who are doing work on trying to get a figure on just how many are in ireland at the moment and their habits. it was great to see one the way i did.
