    UNIVERSITY OF THE AEGEAN
Department of Cultural Technology and Communication
    CALL FOR PAPERS
    3rd COMICS CONFERENCE IN MYTILENE
Fearful Symmetry:Comics, Politics and New Technologies

The Department of Cultural Technology and Communication and the ICONOTOPIA group for the historical and theoretical research of comics announce the Department’s 3rd Conference on the History and Theory of Comics, titled “Fearful Symmetry: Comics, Politics and New Technologies". The conference will take place from October 30 to November 1, 2009 in Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece.

    Framework
In the wake of 9/11 and within the context of cultural globalization and the rise of the new media, the art of comics is characterized by significant developments. Thematically, ideologically and stylistically, comics are transformed to enter a brave new world of fearful symmetries. From the overtly political texts (Palestine, Safe Area Gorazde, Persepolis, Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, Exit Wounds, The Nine-Eleven Report), to comics that, directly or indirectly, tackle contemporary political realities (In the Shadow of No Towers, Blankets, Pride of Baghdad, The Arrival, Y The Last Man, DMZ, Le Monstre, XXe Ciel.com, Civil War, Mourir Au Paradis), to yet others that comment on the effects of contemporary technology or the pangs of contemporary solitude (Epileptic, Black Hole, La Perdida), comics engage in a discussion that concerns us all.

The conference’s topics of discussion are as follows:
    • Political Comics
    • Political Fiction
    • Superheroes in contemporary political reality
    • The personal as political: small tragedies
    • Politics and Humour
    • Ideological Impasses
    • Comics and New Technologies: New Means of Expression
    • Comics and New Technologies: mixed realities
    • New Media Art – Digital Art – Virtual Art: comics as material, as message, as content
    • Political expression in comics language
