Student 5 Day Rambler

    Hi,

I have a couple of questions about the student 5 day rambler card that are not answered on the dublin bus website (god forbid!). It says that it is valid for unlimited travel for 5 non consecutive days. What does that mean exactly - you cannot do 5 days in a row? Does that mean you can do 4, skip a day and then use it again or does there have to be a day's gap between each use? Also how long are these cards valid for - do you have to use them within a certain period of time?

    Thanks

You can use them whenever you want, essentially. So that can be Monday to Friday, or Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, then the following Thursday, if you want.

There is a "Use By" date on them. The one I bought about a week ago is valid until January 2010.

I have one of these and they're great!

You can use them for ANY five days, as long as they're used before the expiry date (Usually about a year - I bought one on Monday and it says Use By Jan 2010).
So yes, you can use them Monday to Friday. Or you could use them every Monday for five weeks. When you use the card on the machine, it tells you how many days are left. When you first use the card, or when you use it on a new day it says, "Day Deducted" to let you know.
AFAIK, the day ends once it hits midnight, not after 24 hours. And you can't use 'em on Nightlink but you can use 'em on Xpresso.

One other point of note: in a fine act of anti-competitive pricing, you go for the standard 5-day €20 ticket, you may use it on the Airlink.

(Please get the Aircoach though. It's faster, more comfortable, and it's important to promote competition :))

And thank god for that, it always annoys me when you buy a 30 day ticket and you can use it for everything EXCEPT Aircoach and Nitelink...

Personally I prefer the 747, even though the Aircoach has those fancy leather seats with lots of leg room, I always end up feeling a little queasy after arriving at the Airport...

    (Fixed your post.)

The €20 tickets work on the Airlink, but not the Nitelink, even though the Airlink is more expensive. Dublin Bus faces competition on the Airlink, but not the Nitelink. Make your own mind up what they're doing.

I personally way prefer the Aircoach. Aside from the warm fuzzy feeling you get of supporting a business that doesn't screw the customer, the competition and the taxpayer all at once, it's a good bit faster. Coming back, the Aircoach flies down the M1 while the Airlink goes via the East Wall and through Drumcondra and stuff. Dunno why you feel queasy (such comfort!), but each to their own I guess.

if you use the bus with a bit of frequency, you'd probably be better off buying the 30 day ticket. Exact same as the 5 day, except its for 30non consecutive days.
    15 for 5 days = 3 per day
    75 for 30days = 2.50 per day
The 30day lasts a year also..

Does this mean the €20 (formerly 18 euro, harumph) 7-day student ticket is gone?

The 30 day does work out cheaper in the long run but its still very expensive compared to the Luas 30 day ticket which is only 47.50. Quite a big difference there.

It seems to be gone now yeah, isn't being advertised on the Dublin Bus website anyway.

Yep the 30 day Student Rambler is great, 75 euro and it does me for 6 weeks Monday-Friday. If i use the bus twice a day for 30 days it costs 108 euro, so im saving a fair bit too! I just wish they'd introduced it before my last term in college....
