I got laid off last week. Have another few days to go on my contract and thats it then. I haven't signed on in about 8 years so I'm a bit unsure of how to go about it. I'm living in Dublin city centre. Can anybody tell me the number I should call or what building I need to go to? Any help would be appreciated, I'm feeling pretty crap now.

Go to your Social welfare office Qu up at the reception window, when you eventually get to speak to the person behind the glass window say the magic words, 'I would like to register as being unemployed.' Do this on the day you become unemployed cos every day you leave it you lose out on benefit

Go to www.welfare.ie first and download your application form. It'll save you a bit of time at your Social Welfare Local Office. The website should also give you details of the SWLO specific to your area.

Thanks for the replies. I think the office I need to go to is Apollo House in Tara Street, but they aren't answering the phone. Does anybody know if I can apply without my P45 because I won't receive that until the end of the month.

I'm pretty sure you can - they will request that you provide any info they need (including your p45) by a certain date. As has already been said go in to the office the 1st day you're unemployed so you don't lose out.

Agreed... just go in with whatever info you have STRAIGHT AWAY and then you're registered... doesn't mean you're entitled but when you've given them ALL the info they require, it will be backdated to that date. And try to get the P45 the day you leave :o there's no reason they can't have it as far as I'm aware. I got mine when I was told I was being let go.

Oh and... don't forget to get a reference :)
