We had a 10 minute arguement in work today as to whether the new E-Class was fugly or not.

    Now this comes out.

    The front's ok...

    6741527.jpg

I think the back looks unbalanced and has neither grace nor strength.

    Rectangular exhaust pipes?

    467218.jpg

The wing mirror and rear light cluster don't work for me either.

What does everyone think of the new MB design direction - are they "doing a Bangle"?

i love the s class elongated look, those exhausts look tacky to me, but those wheel flares are the worst, they're huge.
all in all, i think it's probably gone backwards aesthetically on the current model.

The current S Class is a stunning car in certain colours. This is only a freshen up. Looks pretty good but I prefer the rear lights on the current one.
Trying to make up my mind on the new E Class though. I will have to wait to see one in the flesh. It looks ugly in some pics

I can see what they are trying to do with the design. They are trying to add some 'boxiness' reminiscent of old school Merc's to a design which has already been out for over three years. It just makes it look ungainly if you ask me, and I think they should've waited till the next model when they have a clean sheet to start from.

The steering wheel looks upside down to me for some reason.

Im not such a fan. Big fat 01 7 series arse on it and design lines and creases for no reason other than to be there. The new E looks like Merc are on a technology exchange wth Ssangyong. And all this as BM go back to their conservative ways with the new 7......I still miss my w124 :(

Agreed. I am more horrified by recent MB designs than I was by Bangle BMWs, although the W204 C-class is not too bad and apart from the looks it is a much better car than its predecessor. The W221 S-class is the only S-class in my lifetime that I do not fancy :(

I like the slight refresh :)

I also quite like the new E class, I think it looks very simple and sophisticated, not too sporty or flashy :)

Even the 63 AMG looks like a sleeper :)

What?! The w204 is the best C-class yet lookswise and other wise. Its a stunning looking car when it is specified right. Much nicer than the 3 series and IS and about equal to the A4.

That is a sweeeeeeeeeet looking car as far as im concerned. But again, like all Mercs it will depend on the way it is ordered and what look the owner is going for.

Merc could have done better imo. But don't think the styling will affect sales the way this recession will.

Brand new S-Class buyers tend to be recession proofed. It's the Range Rover and XC90s you'll see disappearing from 3-bed semis in working class suburbia...the S never went there in the first place.

Hmm, nothing really new, a mild facelift if even. I see it has the new E-class strip foglights, they look kinda weird to me. I agree with the steering wheel being upside down.

The rear seems to be leaning more towards a Maybach look, which is a tremendously ugly car.

Is it my imagination or is there less '09 S classes on the road compaired to previous years? Thus the facelift.

They couldn't have facelifted and built it in 4 months. The facelift has nothing to do with 09 sales. I know a friend's dad is just "comfortable" with his 05 S350, though it has been causing him some trouble recently and did fail its NCT.

He's the type of guy that will always buy an S-Class now that he's got one, but sees no reason to change every year. Most S-Class owners would be like this....That's why these people have money in the first place....they have sense.

Regarding my original question is there more '09 S classes sold in the first 3 months compaired to the first 3 months of '06/'07/'08?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,038 ✭✭✭stratos

Bmw must not have believed their luck with the s class. They designed a disgusting 7 series, they must have puked when they saw it in the flesh.
Then the new s class arrives gotten himmel a sigh of relief it looked worse. I have no idea where this new s class comes from it has no grace or balance. The wheel arches are from a jeep. i guess the square exhausts are a "do anything to make it better" lunge.

Don't have the figures, but I imagine it's down slightly, not in the same level as other cars.

I think the A8 will pick up sales with the state of that thing anyway.

Definitely, I'd say it's got some pretty serious new gadgets.

E Class? I'll have a Jag XF, thanks very much. Much nicer looking car.

I'll wait to see the new Jag XJ at the end of the year before i make up my mind on the S Class...

They seem to be turning the S-Class into a junior Maybach of sorts, with broadly similar styling cues. Dear oh dear.

You'll see it sooner than that - in a few months time. Its very striking, a massive departure from the old XJ. The rear of the new one will polarise opinion though.......the whole car is quite different to the XF - it really doesnt just look like a pumped up/stretched XF.

The oul fella was saying it wont be on general release over here until towards the end of the year.

Has anyone got any decent pics of it?

Ya you wont see it in the flesh until later in the year alright but you will see photos long before then. There arent any photos floating around yet, just ones of the heavily clad prototype engineering cars.

What I can't understand is why a facelift nowadays consists of plastering the car in LED's.

They are cheap to make and a new fashion statement (it seems to work for Audi), a cynical comment I know but I'm sure in fairness to Merc etc they are a technical advance.

Is is not a new EU directive ? all new cars must have DRL's - (day time running) lights by 2011 or sumit

some of the gizmos in the new s class

There's also myriad safety systems on the updated a car: Adaptive Highbeam Assist, which stops the headlamps dazzling other drivers, and an enhanced Night View Assist that highlights pedestrians on an in-car display to make them more noticeable. The 2009 S-Class also features Attention Assist: this system monitors the driver's state and alerts him or her if it thinks they are getting drowsy.

There also a new system called Active Body Control, which stabilises the car in extreme crosswinds.

Inside, S-Class owners will be treated to state-of-the-art technology. The flagship model will include a splitscreen that allows the driver and front passenger to view different content on the same screen. While the driver uses sat nav, for example, the front passenger can be watching the latest film on DVD.

not that state of the art so. Blu Ray is the thing to have now :D

I do think Merc could have picked a far more flattering colour to use for the car on brochure alright.....give me a CLS AMG anyday of the week

Its been on Opels, Toyotas and BMWs for years and was made available on Audis last year.

What ever happened to the good aul fashioned gearstick. I wouldn't generally be classed as a luddite, but I like the concept of a gearstick, even if it is only a PRND
