delay in SW payment after doing Fas course?

Looking for quick reliable advice on this one - I signed up to be considered for a 27 week FAS course but it's been cancelled. They MIGHT be running the course again this September but at the moment aren't sure.

There is the option of doing a 6 week full time course and a seperate night course that would cover both the topics of the original course, but would not lead to the same level of Fetac, but hey - at least I have some hope of getting the actual skills.

The guy at the FAS information session about the 6 week course mentioned that you have to sign OFF for the duration of the course, be paid a FAS training allowance for the duration and then sign back ON afterwards.

BUT - he said that there would be a delay of up to 6-8 weeks before you would receive your payment.

    Is this correct?
If so - why would it be so?
    Do they backdate the payment?
I cannot - simply CANNOT afford no to receive my payment (job seeker benefit) for ONE week - never mind SIX - is there anything I can do???

Any advice appreciated - I have to confirm if I'm going to do the course in the next day or 2
