Importing Audio onto PS3: A few questions

I am trying to put a wav collection together on the ps3 and obviously would like the PS3 to put said songs in their appropriate albums but can't seem to get it to do it at th moment.

For example, using WMP, I ripped a CD to WAV (made sure WMP got the details first) then I went to my music and sent the album folder to MUSIC on the External HDD. Now the ps3 recognises the album perfectly (bar Album art) when reading from the Externa HDD but if I try and copy them to the internal HDD I get an "unknown album" with the 23 tracks inside (inside this, the individual track info is fine although still no album art automatically placed).

Another boardsie member has been able to d the exact same procedure and, upon the file being copied to the HDD, have the PS3 recognise the track info BUT ALSO the album art and Album name.

Anyone have any ideas? Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better program than WMP for this?

    Thanks in advance.

No help but +1 to your cause

    On closer inspection :

When you upload music files (mp3s, etc) to your PS3, the ID3 tag of the MP3 will segregate the mp3s into their own folders according to the 'album' tag.

This can result in dozens of mp3s uploaded and separated into a dozen folders. If you want to upload files and move them to their own albums, or just dump every thing into a single album, you can do this by changing the name of the album the desired mp3(s) are inside, the the same name of another album. Instead of overwriting all the album info, it will simply move all the files from one folder with the same name, into the other album, and then delete the spare/empty album automatically.

Quickest way to do this is to rename or create a new album with the title as 'g', since g is the first letter the type cursor appears on when the type box appears.

Then rename the other folders as 'g'. Once all the desired MP3s are combined, simply rename the g folder to whatever you wish.

The only files that will not be moved are files with no id3 tag information for 'album'. These will be automatically moved into a read-only folder called 'unknown'. The unknown folder can be absorbed into another unknown folder if you create one, or you can move the individual files in that folder if you choose.

Note: The PS3 also edits ID3 tags this way. If you upload these files from the PS3 to another device, if the device displays ID3 listings, they will have new information the PS3 added.

Heh, hijacking thread for a sec.

I started using a PS3 media server today, using it i copied several albums from my PC to my PS3. When i dc the server i can still play the songs on my PS3, but i cannot play them ingame. (This is KZ2 which does support ingame music).

Does anyone have a media server that will allow this? The whole point of copying music was so that i COULD play them during gameplay.

    Good Hijack
As far as i know you need to have your music installed on the internal hard drive of the PS3 to play in game music, only some games support this though

As long as you say your hijacking it's ok :P

It is on the hardrive, that's the thing. When i try to play it i get the message "Music cannot be played ingame" then i go to another track that was imported via USB stick and that plays fine.

Does KZ2 support ingame music? I don't own any that do. Dunno how it works in PES.

BTW I found out WAVs don't containalbum info or cover art as it would break the container whatever that means.

Ye, it does online anyway, as soon as you get into the prematch lobby thing it turns on! Turns off again though if you quite the game. Dam Microsoft patenting everything in sight..

Does it work without being in game?
What type of music files are they?

Works without being in game and they are a PCM file. Never heard of that format before...

    PCM is basically WAV.

I don't think the PS3 is made about it. Try the same track in MP3 format and see what happens.

Well i have a few games that music works fine in, Warhawk being one.

Never heard of PCM file before.

Sounds like your music is working in game though WolfForager and Noodler you sorted out your container issue.

I just told you PCM is essentially WAV (a lossless file).

I haven't sorted it out as such, if I put a WAV album on a usb the PS3 can read the title and tracks (but no album art) if I transfer it to the HDD then it becomes an unknown album although the track titles remain.

    Very annoying.

How do i change it to MP3?

And the fact that my music was working ingame wasn't the point, my point was that PCM files don't play ingame and i was lookinf for a possible solution it.

You'd use nearly any music program ever produced on your PC.

Google Wav to Mp3 if you don't already have something that'll do the job.

    I don't think the PS3 likes Wav.

Is there a a particular forum on boards to discuss the pros and cons of verious sigital music formats?

I am trying not to use MP3 but the highest WMA I can get is 192kps. I would like to use Atrac at 352kps but they aren't allowed to be copied to anything else (i.e. can't get them from my Sony Walkman to the PS3 amazingly).

Wav is out of the question because I am not typing out all the album names etc (Wavs transferred to the PS3 seem not to retain this info).

Anyone got any other suggestions re:reasonably high quality music the PS3 can handle?
