    Hi,

Im new here as you may gather i have a retail store that sell specific sports equipment and accessories and clothing and am currently looking for a new POS system for my shop am wondering does anyone recommend any such systems or what i should stay away from or where i might find a bargain. I figure with alot of retail businesses going out of business there should be some floating around 2nd hand which would suit my business. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

fair enough pick up the hardware cheap 2nd hand but i recommend you install a product called excelpos from oneapplications.com as you are unlikely to get a system and the software on it to suit you. Built a 17" touch screen system from items on ebay for 750 all in.

It depends what you want your POS system to do. Choices are many depending on your needs. At a simple level you can use any basic computer with a USB scanner attached to scan items. These USB scanners are available at reasonable cost from many hardware suppliers: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12559 More complex systems use touchscreens, can authorise payments and produce reports. I'd suggest using a free POS software solution, there lots available on SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/search/?words=POS&sort=group_ranking&sortdir=asc&offset=0&type_of_search=soft&pmode=0&form_cat=18
