    Hey everybody,

Im just wondering about babies affected by reduced O2 saturation at birth, I've heard about cerebral hypoxia and intellectual disabilities? I have had a baby recently which had to be delivered by emergency c section, the staff just said that he had reduced O2 sat and raised heart rate, they did not say anything at all about what the possible consequences of this might be, they were a bit flippant about that. This is despite the fact that they did seem to be rushing about etc, there was clearly an emergency of some sort but my OH and me were kept totally in the dark. What is the danger? I am worried now about this whole situation. Thanks everyone.

    Hi there

    Firstly, congrats on the baby.

It probably isn't a great idea for randomers to be commenting on your situation. We don't know the case, there's lots of reasons for midwives/doctors to want to have a baby delivered quickly.

It's important to note though that cerebral hypoxia only results from a prolonged period of oxygen starvation - a lot of kids are born with reduced oxygen saturations, but for the vast majority there are no ongoing problems.

What really scares me is that my baby was taken for 12hrs to neo-nates with no explanation given to myself or my partner! They put me under general anaesthetic because there was no time for an epidural and wouldn't leave my OH in for the procedure. I did not get to see him and my OH only saw him after the put a nasal tube into him. I am just concerned because they told us nothing but clearly something was wrong.

As BigJim says without knowing the full circumstances surrounding your case it would be pretty impossible for anyone to comment. You should really try and get to meet your obstetrician to settle your fears etc.

Hope you and baby are keeping well though and wish you all the best :)
