No increase on petrol due to the threat of a loss of tax income by people travelling to the north to fill up.

Insurance levy increased, no changes on Road tax/VRT/VAT unless I fell asleep.

Wonder will the hauliers kick off now at the substancial increase in their running costs? 5c on its own might not sound like much, but when you're running a fleet of trucks that consume gallons of the stuff - its bound to have an impact.

Indeed it will ...bottom line it simply means that cost of living will not come down as much as you were told (as virtually everything in this country has to be transported/imported over long distances), so all the other tax increases are going to hurt even more.

Was sure we would never see petrol under the 99.9 mark again, hopefully we will see it for another while anyway.

Increase doesn't come into effect until midnight so you still have time to brim it ;)

Don't forget, in the previous budget (Oct'08) 8c was added to petrol and 0c to diesel.

Considering that petrol went up by 8 cent in January (and diesel didn't) they are still better off :P

    EDIT ..too slow ...

As James May says - Diesel is for people who can't afford Petrol anyway. Even when I was a kid, the train called Diesel in Thomas the Tank Engine always looked unhappy :

Exactly - the cost of every consumable will go up. Trains, trucks and busses are all on diesel. Stupid move if you ask me. He should try to make Ireland a more competive counrty to do buisness in, not make it more expensive. It will have a dramatic effect on hauliers.

The TOOL Minister did mention a 'carbon tax' down the line ..........

    Petrol could get a spanking......:o

I like a good Turbo Diesel. I like the Torque. It's good for moving a heavy car. Only reason you can't run a diesel engine on petrol, is because petrol is a strong degreasant, and destroys the fuel system.

But now that lean-burn Petrol Direct Injection systems are coming onstream...

So next budget petrol will increase & not diesel?

Any one know what the prices of petrol/diesel are in NI are I presume this is what is driving the tax increase?

As has been mentioned previously, petrol got stuffed in the previous budget, now diesel gets the same treatment.

Diesel vehs still advantageous in the consumption stakes, so no real change.

Exactly. Classic moranic move by our incompetent Government. It's about as stupid a move as they could make. Adding to the cost of transporting goods is the last thing they should have done. Over 1 cent for every mile travelled added to the cost of each truck in a fleet. Who'll pay? We all will.

What makes anyone here think hauliers pay the same for their diesel as the rest of us. They'll just negotiate a better deal with their suppliers:rolleyes:

Doesn't work like that, and the smaller guys use the DCI card. No option there.

My father is a self employed truck driver and the price he pays is roughly the same as the pumps. Maybe larger fleets have some deals but not every haulier

Yes, in about three weeks time;)

The north saved us from an increase in petrol and drink, he even said it straight out!

I will still head north to buy my booze though!

the 5 cent increase in diesel was to be expected though. there was no way they could have increased petrol anymore.

    tough budget all the same.
I read on the news also that new car sales are down 66%
    stinger for the car dealers.

gas thing about it is that if VRT was significantly reduced IE from 30% to 10% it might encourage more people to buy a new car!

They wouldnt need to cron if they put the right diesel in :)

And the cigarettes were hit but remember they are still over two euro a pack cheaper across the border, oh yes, and a bottle of jameson is eleven euro cheaper.

The way things have gone the only thing I am buying down here at the moment is milk,

I wish that was a joke. Unfortunately I think will be 3-5 months before next emergency budget. Have to get through elections first.
