Back on the bike after a number of years - On 2nd week of daily 10 mile cycle - cycling a Trek 4300 hardtail bike - and it's not getting any easier on the hind quarters - thought it would have toughened up by now! :)

    Any Tips???

Just from my own experience I was doing a 36K roundtrip on a bog standard MTB but it took about 3-4 weeks for the a$$ to harden up!

If you are doing it 5/6days a week then at least 2 pairs of decent cycling shorts. The padding is there for a very good reason. Also if your arse is sore dont be afraid to take a day off from the saddle if you can.

Get cycling shorts. You could consider a different saddle but MTBs used on the road are inherently harder on the arse than a road bike due to the upright position IMHO (I did a long spin into Wicklow on mine when it was snowing.) Apart from that it may just be a matter of getting back used to it.

Yep, takes a few weeks for the ass to desensitise. Also takes a couple of days to get back after a holiday. Breaks are also essential - if you don't have a couple of days off the saddle in a week it'll take a lot longer to recover.

The Lidl stuff is generally OK, not great, but certainly cheap and better than nothing. Should be fine for a 16km cycle.

I've discovered that padded shorts have another advantage. They help restrict any 'entry' due to a bucking saddle on a hardtail. Ow.

I bought altura baggy shorts with those liners and wore them for the first time yesterday. They are comfortable, but i think it has more to do with my saddle suiting me, as I never get soreness no matter what shorts I have on.

I got them in the Great Outdoors on Chatham St., off O'Connell Street. I was expecting to have to buy large, but medium fit perfectly.
