promote a webiste to retailers

    Im almost finished a website and will be ready to launch it soon. Its a product listing service for "real world" retailers. Its not very original but the name is good and its easy use and free. So what I need is retailers to sign up and add content then users to visit the site. I need the reatilers first. How would I go about this, im very aware of spam and dont want to email which would be very cheap. I dont want to take up peoples time by calling or visiting, im sure they are swamped with this kind of stuff. What I plan to do I send a letter outlinig the service to 100s of retailers. What do ye think of this approach or would anyone have any other ideas on how to target retailers only. Thanks

    Sending letters could be considered spam in the same way as sending emails.

    I'd see letters as OK.

    Also, I'd consider carefully directed emails as being OK - to me spam is stuff that's sent out with a "muck-spreader" approach with little or no consideration of a target audience or potential customers.

    Why not trial 100 of each, and follow up with a phone call a few days later? Then you try to get a meeting set up.

    That way you'll have a reason for the call - following up on the email or letter - and you'll also have a good piece of research regarding how effective each method is.

    Here's a tip - a mentor told me a while back that all of this stuff can be best described as "casual marketing", and that you can only describe your activities as "selling" when you're sat in front of a potential customer trying to get him/her to buy. Learning that difference was key for me as I entered the "sales" phase of my business.

    Your business needs a group of retailers to get on-line to prove the concept - that's where the really hard sell will be - then you'll find sales somewhat easier as other people see existing presence and can see what sales / activity your site generates. For now - it's a lot of hard work, and you need to be meeting with retailers - however you get to do that. It might even mean walking the High Streets and just walking in and looking for a manager / owner to try to arrange a meeting.
