Jobseekers Benefit question...

    Hi

Maybe someone can answer this one for me as the local social welfare office here weren't helpful at all when I asked, giving me funny looks when I asked ?!

I was made redundant and have applied for Jobseekers Benefit last week. I had all forms, paperwork etc., with me and filled in the form with the woman at the desk. Question is, how will I know when/if the claim is successful ? Do they send you a letter in the post or give you a phonecall or something ?
I don't even know what day I'm supposed to go to the post office on every week, will they let me know that day also ?

Might be a simple question but something they wouldn't even answer for me when I asked two separate people there.

    Thanks

You will (eventually) receive a letter which will tell you whether or not your claim was successful and if so, where and when to pick your money up. I was waiting almost 12 weeks.
Have you been interviewed by the social welfare inspector yet? They're supposed to call out to the house, but most just give a ring and do the means test over the phone.

The OP is applying for Job Seeker's Benefit, for which there is no means test (although there may be a period of disqualification based on redundancy payments)

I think its 9 weeks. Off the top of my head, so pretty much worthless.:)

The disqualification period for redundancy depends on the amount received.
It has to be fairly big before it actually affects your claim, but can't remember exactly how much. Ask at your local office and they'd be able to tell you.

A question for the experts out there.

    I got approx 58k redundancy,
I put my claim in on the 2nd June.
First three days are waiting I believe, so that brings me up to 5th June.
Add on the two weeks disqualification and thats 19th June.
Got my first payment last Monday (6th July) which was one weeks money.

So am I missing something, or do the arrears come after?
I tried ringing the office to no avail.

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah the arrears might be on your next payment, if not enquire about it at your local office. One thing about the redundancy payment, if you can show that you are using some of it to pay of a loan they should take that amount of your redundancy amount before they do the disallowance.

hi guys,i applied for JB around 9th June, was told there and then that i'm eligible for E160 per week(happy days) and id get a letter in 5-6 weeks telling me to pick up my moneys. i got sent a bunch of dockets this week that i have to get stamped by my HR dept(i still work sundays).

however, the letter was signed my a "deciding officer" which makes me me wonder if they havn't actually decided that i'm eligible(i am) and that they may suddenly decide not to approve me....?guess im just very nervous, things are extremely tight for me at the min!

nah, the deciding officer is the one that decided you were owed the money.

    Essentially, it's all sorted :)
