As with most people I will be holding on to my vehicle for the forseeable future.
Years ago I taxied and some diesels went around the clock well over twice.
Is this still the case? Engine is 2.5 turbo Mazda/Ford Bt50 '07.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Better build quality in diesel engines (usually!) due to higher pressures.....

Local taximan has his 1.9tdi vag engine at 171k miles.

diesel engines are probably more robust (from what I hear!) but it's also important to look after your engine, regular oil changes etc.
my brother has a Passat Diesel with 165k on the clock and a Honda Civic Saloon (Petrol) with 170k on the clock, both running perfectly.

98 Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9tdi with 260k miles up, engine going like a rolex watch. Other parts starting to show signs of giving up. I wouldnt say it was the best minded car ever either. It still doing 600-700 miles a week at about 50mpg for me though

That is nothing unusual, 170k is not a lot.
My friend bought his Mercedes-Benz W124 in Germany about 10 years ago with 560k km on the clock. He drives a lot and put another 600k km on it, so there is 160k km on the clock at the moment and the machine drives as it should. The car just gets regular, proper service.
Most people imagine that after 100-200k the whole car is going to fall apart or something. Well... with the way that they treat their cars, it is possible.

    Regards.

If you go on to carzone, select diesel cars and then sort by mileage, that should give you an idea of what modern diesels are doing.

Regular oil checks and servicing with good manufacturer recommended oil is the key to making any engine run to high miles.

Sympathetc driving helps also. Try to keep the revs low for a couple of miles when you first start up the engine and drive it easy before you turn it off to let the turbo cool down.

Another tip is to use manufacturers oil filters, spurious ones may have less filter media in them.

Apart from that change the timing belt at the correct interval or earlier.

My car has 200k+ on it and the odometer is broken, rest of the car is falling to pieces however, its a 1.9d citroen zantia. The engine runs sweet as a nut however.

    We have 3 diesels:

    1995 Mondeo: 230k mls
    2002 Avensis: 120k mls
    2003 Focus: 102k mls

None have suffered any major engine related breakdowns, although both the Avensis and Focus have needed flywheels.

You do really need to like a car to keep it going beyond 200k though.
