BMW 335 Coupe

It has a 3lt bi-turbo engine, excellent engine by all accounts, producing ~300hp and ~300lb/ft and it is supposed to be not far off the old E46 M3 for straight line pace.

MarkN on here had one recently, he upgraded to an M3, he might be on to comment in awhile :)

Yep they're twin turbo!! And 300bhp iirc

    Wow ...

Presume a remap might add another 40 odd bhp on top of that.

Never a big BMW fan but this is starting to get my interest. Had decided to buy an Audi TT but now I'm not sure.

Must be a seriously fast car ...

    0-60?

Here are the SportAuto test figures for it (the most comprehensive testers out there IMO)

and to compare to some other cars :)

    the TTS

    the standard TT

and the old Z4 3.0si (because they are such good value as their prices have dropped like a stone)

Officially i think it is 5.5 0-60 but road tests have shown it to be closer to 5 seconds. Its almost too close in terms of performance to the M3 and i think that is why BMW downplay its performance.

Definitely better value than an M3 anyway.

With a remap maybe it could be close to the new M3(as they can gain 60hp+ from a simple remap) but here is the M3 test to show that the M3 is a good bit ahead.

    th_43908515yh8.jpg

And that is just looking at straight line speed, the M3 offers so much more in other areas ;)

    here have a look

    335i

    M3
    th_27030922ba4-1.jpgth_37223411yl0.jpg

the 335i is in no way as responsive as the M3 and can't compete with the overall feeling of being connected to the car the M3 gives.
look, my 2.0T TT puts in better slalom time than the 335i :)

    Hi there,

Am currently driving a 335i- its 306bhp as standard but its very easy to add more - alot more.
Two companies that get good reviews in the UK are DMS and evolve, both can up the hp to between 370-380 by a simple remap. Evolve offer a stage 3 tune adding an intercooler, free flowing exhaust and filter that will bring the 335i to 420 bhp.
When the car was standard it would break traction easily in the wet but you can get a Qualife LSD for approx 1,200 sterling that helps no end combined with some thicker hartage anti-roll bars (offered by the same company- Birds) which will transform the 335i to a seriously quick car. Plus everybody thinks its just a 318i so it doesnt get too much attention!

Yip that's my old car. Low kms, always hand washed, newish rear tyres and FSH, can't go wrong really!

The M3 is nothing like the 335 though, yeh ok, on paper you can talk about 0-60 times but it's about a lot more than that.

I won't mention the far superior ride quality of the M3 over the M sport with 19" RFTs either... :p

335 is a very quick car though and bear in mind that 2 years ago that was an €81,000 car and you'd get it for mid-late 30s now.

Go for 335d coupe, far better car imo and much more saleable !!

Hey Mark Can you give a bit more detail on what you thought of the 335?? i'm thinking about a 335d (1 year old) and just wondering what your overall thoughts on the car were? Performance, economy etc would you go again for 1?? Any advice?? Or anyone else with some words of wisdom on 335's would be gratefully appreciated. thanks

I have driven both (335i and 335d), both fine cars. There are /were a couple of 335i owners here so they will give more detail. The 335d was seriously fast but I needed something with a bit more room/3 seats in back so I went for the 535d. I love the 535d - torque is unbelievable and as for economy I am getting around 35mpg on mixed driving. I havent had any problems to date

Great car, very smooth but it was stupidly quick for a car with 'only' 306bhp, whether the auto box helped it seem that way, it was still a very capable car and unless you're a true petrol head the M3 would be considered a luxury over it - how much power do you need afterall.

They're tail happy enough and the M3 is a lot more stable in the wet in the sense that if it steps out on a roundabout or whatever, it'll pull you back in and almost says "go on, push it harder I dare ya" but you won't swap ends where in the 335i you'd just either be sitting where your arse should be or the traction will work but it just doesn't seem to do it as well. I can imagine that the amount of torque in the diesel would only increase this problem.

I've never driven a 335d so I've no experience at all of them but where a lot of petrol cars and their diesel counterparts would be hard to compare mid range for grunt the petrol in this car would keep up fairly easily I'd say, there's a lot of pull from the twin turbos.

62 litres of juice would get me about 380-400kms but to be honest for a V8 and 420bhp the M3 is only slightly thirstier.

Thanks guys for the comments. Mark by my calculations that 20 miles per gallon, is that correct?? I know its a high peroformance pertrol but i would still have expected a bit better than that?? Did you mean 400 miles??

I had a 335d saloon and a 335i coupe as demos, both are pretty awesome. The torque in the d is immense, its just keeps pulling away but the noise in the port tunnel from the petrol with the windows down is quite special. I was getting 34MPG in the d, you would be lucky to get 20 in the petrol. If i was to buy one today my head would get the d but there's nothing like the rumble of the 335i. I would go with the Auto with paddle shift some of the earlier 335's didnt have it so make sure if your looking at one it comes with it. The car seems to grip better with 18"'s thats what i found anyway but the 19"'s look great, no matter which one you go for you'll have a smile on your face.

Mark N i believe that 335i you had was my old demo, sat nav and 19" 55032?? lovely car.

i believe the 335d has more torque than the E60 M5.

Yeah I think it was 520 foot pounds in the M5 and 580 in the 335d. The M5 is a different kettle of fish though, that thing just eats roads. Whats impressive about the 335d is when your plodding along around 110km's and you press the peddle, it just go's. A great car i miss it terribly.....

We opened an Opel dealer just down the road so I moved down there, I must admit the 2 litre diesel just doesnt have the same kick as 3 litre twin turbo!! The green party have well and truly screwed that up. How you finding the M3? there's a superb noise off it when you start it on a cold morning. In fairness you seem to have kept the 335 very well, i think it was Phil you bought it off? he's off in OZ now living the life.

Yeh it's a great car, sounds nice and raw first thing, different car to the 335, the handling is incredible. Had a look at the black 07 in Duffy's but the one I got was newer and same to change so..

It was Phil that I got it from alright. I've an Opel mad mate who's on his second OPC, I'll send him your way when he's shopping again. ;)

Sound, enjoy the M3. They really are a fine car. Tell your mate to look this up, if he's into OPC he'll appreciate this new bus. http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090415.006/vauxhall-insignia-vxr-aka-opel-insignia-opc-officially-revealed

Am currently driving a 335i and some of the previous 335i owners must have had a seriously heavy right foot or have done a lot of city driving- I average around 25-27 mpg on a mix of town and A/B road driving and can see over 34 mpg on a long motorway trip. On a full tank of juice for the past year Ive averaged about 330 miles on each tank (and thats with a little magic having been sprinkled on the turbos as well) and I dont drive like an old lady either!

Drove the 335d before I purchased the i and no doubt it was a fantastic car but left me a little cold as it was too easy to fly using the auto gearbox and the noise was nowhere as nice as the i.

Get a test drive in both and base your decision on that.

    Regards
