So, yeah. Just got this email saying:
Subject: JS & SS TP - VIVA/Oral Exam dates

    Dear students,

Please make yourselves available to meet with the TP Maths Extern if necessary from Wednesday the 17th of June to Friday the 19th of June, 2009.

If we get any further information from the External Examiner we will keep you posted.

.... so eh what? What the hell is this? I've not heard of it before; should I have?

I was only aware of it happening in SS, though presumably given that JS counts towards your final marks it is a possibility. Its for people who are on the border between two grades, they give you an oral exam to see which grade is more appropriate essentially. They vary wildly in difficulty and standard though.

Vivas aren't just for people on the border of grades. They'll also choose a selection of people who got 1sts and II-2's etc to vet the standard. It's a benchmarking practice.

Oh, news to me. Only people on the borderline were interviewed last year (thankfully, cause from what I heard about them I would have done ****e). I shall, however, bow to your greater knowledge!
