If you had to pick 3 10k's a year

    Hi all,

I drift in and out of light jogging training and have come to the conclusion I let it slip so frequently becuase I never really have any serious objective to which I am absolutely committted. I set myself 'soft' goals of losing X KG in my own head but they slowly get forgotten about or replaced with some other tame goal.

At my worst, even after a break of a few weeks, I can jog 3k and slowly build up to 5k.

I was listening to some people talk about the Great Ireland Run yesterday and it dawned on me that if I committed to training for and running 3 X 10ks a year it would keep me fairly well focused most of the time as I hate to publicly commit to something and then not deliver. (I don't count personal commitments made in my head to 'me' in that BTW)

So, if I wanted to do 3 X 10k events a year spaced out throughout the year with at least 3 months between each event what would people recommend?

I'm based in South Co Dublin.

    Regards,

    Ben

BHAA have a great one in Firhouse in September. 2 laps, fairly flat and very fast.

I know they're not 3 months apart, but why not try the adidias series. They are July, August and September, and would be a good motivator for keeping training up over the summer.

Building your year around 10k's? could do worse I guess - these are my favourite ones for the different seasons with the reason I like them in brackets - unfortunately for you many of them are in the west.

Spring: AAI National 10K - location moves around but always on end-april - this year it's in Navan (usually well organised, super field).

    Summer: Claregalway 10k (flat, fast)

Autumn: Hollymount international road race 10k (historic, good field).

Winter: Fields of Athenry 10k in St-Stephen's Day (well organised, good field).

There are some others (e.g. the clare people 10k) that I'd like to check out but the above races are flawless.

Yeah I wasnt really going to run many races over 5k this year but I was so impressed by this race last December that its definitely one I'll do.

Really nice challenging course, great atmosphere and its for an excellent cause so I would definitely recommend it.

the dunshaughlin 10k in june is a must do for me........as flat as 10k course as ur likely to get (there are two hills on it but compared to any standard 10k they are not very noticeable) and the weather is usually perfect for it... sunny and warm but in the evening so the sun not blazing down on u....very well organised race and absolutely tonnes of good grub and tea afterwards:P

Is the National 10K just for club runners or open to anyone?

Open to all to take part. Need to be AAI reg to qualify for National 10K champs though. Entry form downloadable from AAI website. I believe it will be chip timed this year.

Sunday 26th April 2pm, Claremont Stadium Navan.

I have heard talk that the Claregalway 10k will be changing course this year, possibly 2 laps of the Galway 5k Series route. If that's the case, then it won't be flat.
But then its more of a challenge, right ;-)
