Rent Allowance even though landlord pays no rent taxes?

I have just become unemployed. I have been living in a great house just of Stephen's green for only 400euros a month. The reason it is so cheap as I have been sharing the house with the landlord who is an old friend of mine.

As far as I know he is not paying any tax on this income and so now that I'm unemployed I'm pretty sure I can't apply for rent allowance. And if I did I presume that he would be caught for rent avoidance.

Is there another option that I can get some or partial rent allowance as I am willing to scrape by for a month at least to which I will hopefully have a new job as the place is great and cheap.

    Any ideas? Or alternatives?

he's probably using the rent a room scheme. You should inquire at your local swo, but there is nothing on the page for the rent supplement that suggests you wouldn't be entitled to it if you satisfy the means test conditions etc.

Note that there is a limit on the maximum rent the HSE will pay for, depending on your location.

That's great thanks a lot. It is definitly less than 10k. On the form it said that he has to complete a Tax Return Form (Form 12) at the end of the tax year indicating that he has received income from the "Rent a room" scheme; so all I have to do is make sure that he does this by the end of the year.

    Thanks a lot Xiney.
