Hey, I need to NCT my car in May and was wondering where the nearest centre to Ranelgh is? Also I haven't NCT'd a car before: do I need to get it serviced before hand? Thanks

Probably Deansgrange or Fonthill. A lot of garages do "pre-NCT services" but these are a waste of time and money. Best pre-NCT you will get is an NCT. If you fail, they tell you where you failed, you go get it fixed and come back so they can check it out.

There are easy enough simple checks you can do yourself first. Get the car washed and tell whover is washing it that its going for an NCT, and to spray down the underbody. Ensure air pressure is correct, ensure seatbelts are all showing and not tangled up behind rear seats, take off hubcaps if you have them, and make sure the car is empty (boot included).

    Edit:
From NCT.ie , preparation for the test:
    Ensure:
    1. Your car has adequate oil and water.
    2. The boot is empty and seats are clear of personal belongings. It is not necessary to remove baby seats, however, if they are in situ, they will be inspected for security and may fail.
    3. The vehicle is reasonably clean (especially the underbody)
    4. The wheel hubcaps are removed (only in the case where the wheel nuts are NOT visible) and
the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.
    5. The engine is in a fit state to be tested e.g. cam belt / timing belt. You may be asked to sign a
    disclaimer at the test centre.
    6. Seatbelts and clips are fully visible.
